1. Let's publish your brush materials!

In Clip Studio Assets, you can publish materials that can be used with Clip Studio Paint, as well as download and use published materials.

Wondering how to publish your own materials on Clip Studio Assets?

It might sound like a lot of work, but there’s no need to think too hard. For example, do you have materials like this?

  • A custom effect line pen you made for yourself
  • A custom inking pen
  • Useful brushes for painting
  • Decoration brushes that make drawing illustration and comic background effects easier

Pens and brushes that you made for yourself may be practical and useful materials for others as well.

Why not publish them on Clip Studio Assets?

This lesson will show you how to publish brush materials such as pens and decoration brushes.

If you don’t have a brush to publish but want to try making one, please refer to the following tutorials.

Q. Can I publish any kind of brush on Clip Studio Assets?

A. You can only publish original materials that you have made on Clip Studio Assets.

This means that you cannot publish compilations of materials made by other people or customized materials made by others.

You should also make sure that any brush tip images or textures are your own images. You cannot publish brushes made with stock materials or materials created by someone else.

This includes images or materials that are copyright-free or free for commercial use. Of course, these rules only apply when publishing to Assets! You are free to use such brushes and materials for personal use.

For details, refer to the following terms of use and guidelines.

2. Uploading materials - preparation -

Once you’ve decided on a material, let’s check what we need in order to publish it.

2.1 Material settings

First, make sure the [Tool property] is set to usable values.

There are four points to check.

(1) Sub Tool Name: Make sure the name is descriptive.

(2) Brush size: Make sure the size isn’t too big or too small.

(3) Tool properties: The properties displayed in [Tool property] can be set in the [Sub tool detail] palette.

Check if the necessary items are displayed in [Tool property]. Also, be sure that any unnecessary or unused items are not displayed.

Please read the following article to learn more about displaying/hiding [Tool Property] items.

(4) Pen and brush tip image expression colors:

When using a monochrome or gray brush tip image, the drawing and background colors can be used as a drawing color.

If the expression color of the brush tip image is in color, the drawing color will be the image’s color.

Make sure that it is set to the intended color.

  • For details on brush expression colors, please refer to the following.

Note:

For brushes and pens that use images, the used images will be registered in the material palette.

In order to avoid accidental deletion and to make searching easer, we recommend giving the image the same name as the brush material.

After confirming the settings, register the current settings as the initial settings. To register the current settings as the initial settings, select [Register to initial settings] under [Menu].

2.2 Registering to the material palette

After preparing the brushes and tools, register them to the [Material] palette.

To do this, select the tool you want to publish from the [sub tool] palette, and select [Register sub tool as material] from the upper left [Menu].

When [Material property] is displayed, check the [Material name] and select [Location to save material]. When you click [OK], the brush material will be registered to the [Material palette].

The material is complete.

2.3 Preparing examples and introductions

Next, let's prepare examples and introductions for the material.

The example and introduction are necessary to show what the material is, and how to use it. Even a simple introduction will do the job.

Prepare the following: a thumbnail, an introduction, and an example.

(1) Thumbnail

Thumbnails are registered automatically, but you can also change it to any image you have created for it.

(2) Introduction

This is the introduction above the instructions and example(s). You can show the material’s purpose (for comics, for illustration, etc.) and how you can use it, etc. You can input up to 500 characters.

【Introduction example】

  • This is a brush material for the shadows of sea waves. It can be used to draw an ocean.
  • This is a lace-pattern brush material with small flowers. It can be used for clothes, etc.

(3) Examples

An example can be put in the instructions and example section. For example, Celsys official materials are jpeg files about 400 pixels in size. There is no specific rule on the size, but when you create it with a width under 550 pixels, the image fills the space nicely.

If the example is a brush or a pen, what will the stroke look like? If you can change its color, its helpful to see brush examples of color alternatives.

<Example of a background created using a brush>

This material uses a background that was made using a brush. It makes it easier to understand how to use it, and what the finished image will look like. Part of the example can be used as the thumbnail.

<Showcasing the stroke and colors of a decoration brush>

For examples of decoration brushes, adding strokes and color variations with the example makes it easier for others to picture the brush.

<A sample using part of your work>

Another example method is a cutout of your own work in which you used the brush. This is easy to make, as you just need to capture the part you are using it.

After you have prepared the material, its description, and examples, let's publish the material on Clip Studio Assets using the method in the below article.
