Scanning the illustration and digitally coloring
Scanning
I scan my drawn illustrations and open them in Clip Studio Paint.
- The following courses also explain how to scan images.
Extracting the scanned line art
(1) I increase the brightness of the scanned layer to whiten the paper's background using [Layer] menu > [New Correction Layer] > [Brightness/Contrast].
(2) Then I make the line art more pronounced by adjusting [Layer] menu > [New Correction Layer] > [Level Correction].
(3) At this stage, I select [Layer] menu > [Flatten image] and merge the adjustment and the line art layers.
(4) After merging the layers, I select [Edit] menu > [Convert brightness to opacity] to turn the brightened background transparent.
Coloring the imported image
Dividing and coloring the line art
(1) I duplicate the line art layer and delete everything other than the parts I will color.
(2) I create a new layer and use the [Milli pen] tool to color the background.
(3) I select the line art layer and then select [Lock Transparency] from the [Layer] menu. This setting allows you to color any part of the layer that isn't transparent.
(4) I then color the image using the [Milli pen] sub-tool.
(5) For the last step, I create a new layer on top of the background layer and set [Clip at Layer Below] from the [Layer] menu. This setting allows you to paint within the boundaries of the background below. I then use the [Milli pen] to draw the patterns on the layer.
I use this procedure to color each accessory illustration. Then I create a layer folder to hold each one separately.
