First I make the line and set it on the reference plane.

Then I use the marker (mono filling) to paint in the areas on different levels (skin, hair, ears ...)

It is important not to forget to tick the box "Do not exceed reference level" with the marker. This is not how you paint over the reference line

Then I make a clipping mask for dark and light shades for each batch. Also for the pattern.

I go to the skin layer and add a clipping mask and set it to multiply. Then I use a shade darker than the skin color itself and paint the dark shady sides of my character with the airbrush (soft).

Then I add a clipping mask again and set it to multiply negative.

I use airbrush (soft) and now paint the light areas of my character.

Now I do my background and highlights in the foreground and my picture is finished.

You can try out a lot with different pens.

Watercolor, watercolors or oil paints.

Try out what suits you best.

Have fun painting.

XOXO
