Hello! I am Bsamsas. This time I share some tips to learn how to make fashion design sketches. We will learn about the construction of a female mannequin and its poses. Also to the use of geometric figures as a creative resource when designing.

Go for it!

Manikin. Basic pose.

First, we draw a vertical line on our sheet. And we divide it into 10 approximately equal segments.

(Don't worry, I've prepared downloadable templates to make your job easier.)

We will start by doing the basic structure, let me explain how we will distribute the body parts of our model:

-First segment: We draw an ellipse for the face, it will be as long as a segment.

-Second segment: We will divide this segment into three parts, and in the 2/3 part of this, we will place the shoulders. Each shoulder, from the center line to the end, will be the same width as that of the face. We draw a line that will be the neck, vertically from the head to the shoulders.

-Third segment: The third segment will also be divided into three parts, and in the 2/3 part, there will be the nipples, that is, the center of the circle that will be the bust, the size of the bust is free to choose.

-Fourth segment: In the fourth segment will be the abdomen, the curve of the abdomen will be in a line that we will place approximately in the middle of this segment. The width of the waist is a free choice, as long as it is less than the width of the shoulders.

-Fifth segment: The fifth segment will correspond to the hips, they will be found in a line that will be in the 2/3 part of the segment. They will be the same width as the shoulders.

In the middle of the hips we will make a "V" shape that will then represent the genital area.

From the middle of each half of the hip, we will draw a line to the lower end of the entire structure, these will be the legs; I chose to lean my right leg a bit.

Now, we will finish making the joints.

At the ends of the shoulders we will make two ovals, remember that they should not exceed the height of the shoulder line that we made, these ovals will not be very wide and will extend until almost touching the busts. From the third line, we will draw two curves that will be the arms, they have the same length as the torso, and the elbow will be on the same line as the waist.

At the ends of the arms will begin the hand, which will be the same height as the face.

We will draw the knee with two circles that will be at the height of 2/3 of the seventh segment.

The ankles will be placed on the upper line of the tenth segment, from where the feet will begin that will reach the floor line, the last line.

In a new layer, we will make the body itself. We will start with the head, the ears will be centered approximately in the middle of the face, we will make the hair at the top. The neck will drop to just before the shoulder line. From the middle of the neck, we will join with the shoulders, these will be the traps. We draw the clavicle, it is advisable to draw it from end to end.

Now for the torso, we follow the guide lines, trying to make strokes that are as smooth as possible. The navel is a little below the waist line.

The arms come out from the shoulder, always downwards, we want to avoid shoulders that are "masculine". Hands can be that simple, there is no need to draw all the fingers in most cases.

We complete the legs and the foot. We draw the foot as simple as possible.

With this we finish a female mannequin with a static pose.

Manikin. Dynamic Pose.

To make the following model, I used the template. Note that I have used another pose, a more dynamic one, therefore it requires more movement. In this case I did it by moving the lines of the structure off the axis of the pose at rest.

First, the line of the shoulders I tilted to the side, then the line of the busts, which necessarily has to be parallel to the line of the shoulders.

Afterwards, we leave the waist line horizontal in most cases, it will never be parallel to the shoulder line. We will draw a curved line from the shoulders to the hips, this will be the model's column, the center of the waist will move to coincide with the column, and the width will be measured from this line.

I angled the hip line in such a way that it was in the opposite direction to the shoulder line.

The legs were arranged in such a way that they give a feeling of stability and movement at the same time. The left leg fully supported on the floor, and the right leg extended.

Since we will move the joints, we will use the pendulum method, to determine the height of the elbows, we will imagine a pendulum from the waist line, and for the knees we will do the same from the knee line.

By drawing the body with more defined lines, it would look something like this.

It is important to practice fashion design with a hand-drawn mannequin, this will help you know the proportions of the body. You can try drawing the joints and lines of the body on real modeling photos that you find online. This will help you find more poses and understand how the world of the fashion design sketch works.

Sketches with the help of geometric guides.

Next, we will do a very useful exercise to loosen up when designing.

We will use lines that follow geometric patterns, you can use any pattern that comes to mind, do not worry about other issues such as clothing or openings of the garment. You have to feel free when drawing sketches, it is the first step and a very important step to develop your creativity as a designer.

On an empty mannequin, we will draw line patterns. These lines can be done with total freedom, if you wish, you can divide the patterns according to the parts of the body.

Following the guide lines, we will draw the clothes, it is not necessary to follow the lines exactly, they are only guides. remember to think about the movement of the clothing, its texture.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to designing. Don't limit yourself!

Template.

This is a downloadable template, due to the clip studio tips image size limit, the image quality was reduced. If you need the template in better resolution, send me a private message and I will send it to you without problems.

I hope it has been helpful to you. Until next time!
