Do you need a more efficient jewelry drawing technique for more consistent webtoon comic or manga uploads? Well, I’m here to help!

I will be using a ring, necklace, and tiara as examples, but you can apply these techniques to whatever you want. I used Clip Studio Paint.

STEP 1: Learn the basics!

____________② Metal will reflect colours around it

____________① They’re typically cut or left raw. Either way, they’re angular with edges on whatever shape you choose to draw. And they are translucent (not as transparent as glass, but still not opaque).

② Though they’re translucent, they still have shadows and shine, depending on the light direction.

STEP 2: Get references and sketch!

References are really important. Even the most experienced artists use them, because simply drawing from your imagination can turn out entirely different on your page. Using references gives you loads of inspiration and something to compare your work to.

For this painting, I first researched other artworks and photos of jewelry. Then I brainstormed how I’d like my own to look and sketched it out. Use a pencil to rough sketch.

Remember, you're ROUGH SKETCHING: don't be disheartened if it doesn't look how you want it to yet. I mean, look at my own sketch: it looks terrible! lol.

STEP 3: Line art!

Create a new layer above the sketch.

Simply use the ‘figure tool’ to line and shape your sketch. Or you can use the ‘pen tool’ at any size to line it yourself by hand.

Also, it’s up to you if you want to use the ‘decoration tool’ instead to make a chain/cord for necklace jewellery rather than drawing it yourself.

STEP 4: Base colors!

Disable the sketch layer.

Create a new layer below the line art layer to color the jewelry. Pick whatever color you want from the ‘color wheel’ to color your jewelry’s line art, both metal parts and gems (use the ‘fill tool’ and use the ‘pen tool’ to color smaller areas).

However, note that specific gems and metals have specific colors. E.g. Gold is gold colored, silver and iron are grey colored, rubies are red colored, etc.

STEP 5: Shadows and lighting!

Create a new layer above the base color layer.

Select the layer’s ‘Overlay’ option. ‘Clip’ the layer to the base color layer below. Adjust the layer’s opacity to anything less than 80%. For the shadows’ color, select maroon.

I like to use the ‘Oil paint flat brush’ at a medium or large size but any brush and size is fine.

Then draw the shadows. It depends on whatever direction light is shining on your jewelry. Tip: try to make it flow with the line art.

Create a new layer above the base color layer.

Select the layer’s ‘Overlay’ option. ‘Clip’ the layer to the base color layer below. Adjust the layer’s opacity to anything less than 80%. For the lighting’s color, select white.

Then draw the lighting. It depends on whatever direction light is shining on your jewelry. Tip: try to make it flow with the line art.

To make your base colors less drab, take any random colors that you think might compliment the base colors and paint it in as highlights on the base color layer.

Press Ctrl+U or Command+U. You can play around with the base color layer’s ‘hue/saturation/luminosity’ if you want (to get some different results).

STEP 6: Add some shine and sparkles!

Use the ‘pen tool’ at a medium or large size. For the color, select white.

‘Lock’ the base color layer. Add some shine on the base color layer, to the jewelry. Note: It depends on the direction of light. Be careful not to get carried away and add too much!

Feel free to add sparkles (also on the base color layer) out of the line art (after you ‘unlock’ the base color layer), but use a different color than white.

STEP 7: And...you’re done! That’s it folks! ;D

I’d love feedback; Please let me know in the comments if this technique helped or if your webtoon or manga uploads got more consistent. Also, comment what other tutorials you'd like to see!

Thanks for tuning in; hope this helped you very quickly and easily draw jewelry for your webtoon comic or manga!

:)
