Character Design with Personality
Good day everyone,
Let's get straight into character design.
There are certain ways to do character design in Clip Studio ranging from using the 3D models in the software or taking photos of real-life people for poses, RossDraws is the perfect example for this.
At the end of the day, these will be just references that you will use to allow you to create what you wish from characters, monsters and even animals. Anyways, let's move into the meat of the tip.
3D Posing
Using the 3D characters, you can create all sorts of poses but at the end of it all, you will need to think what kind of person the character you are creating ranging from personality, his/her poses that determine if they are experienced fighter in either combat or other other things.
I posed this character from static pose with 3 different dynamic action poses which already can tell you a lot of the things like in his static pose(Middle pose), he's either reading a book or talking to someone which shows he's a more intellectual type of person while his other 3 dynamic action poses show certain power poses which showcases he's still inexperienced in combat or he's a power type character when it comes to combat.
The image below shows the lines that showcases static poses can also have curves in them if you look at how you pose the 3D model.
Story told through drafts
Basic shapes helps define the body shape of the character if they are either big body or not.
The character showcases a more leaner yet ripped body but when looking at the dynamic, he becomes even more buffed showcasing that either he's a strong fighter yet slow or an inexperienced fighter.
With just draft of the design, you can already tell a story about the character. Many artists in the industry have used drafts to bring out the personality of the character through poses.
Poses aided with expressions
The poses that you use for the design of the character become so much more lively to look at when you put on expressions for the character which will bring out the actual character and personality of who your drawing.
Though its not part of the topic of posing, the outfits are also one of the key features of bringing out the personality of the character.
Use it as reference!
At the end of it all, as an artist, never be afraid to exaggerate or change up things as even if the 3D model in Clip Studio is great, it will still have limits if you look close enough. Always be ready to change things up if you feel like you can do more to change the shape and exaggerate the pose of the character.
Remember, it's only reference at the end of the design that can help you speed up your work or do certain camera angles or poses that you feel like you'll take time to do from scratch.
Final Product
Well, not really final product but with this, you have an idea of what character you want to make and bring out that can attract your audience.
Character Design is all about building up that character from scratch and help you introduce your characters. Adding dynamic action poses and/or static poses can also instantly bring out the personality and nature of the character that you are creating from either a fighter, swordsman, lecturer, soldier or even a business man. Every person's body language is defined by how they move and how they stand.
And well, it was short but I hope you find this insightful.
