It wasn't until recently that I opened Clip studio paint to paint

The result is a great painting!

It’s actually quite useful!

It just so happens that Clip studio tips have some themes recently.

I’m going to give you a little tutorial on how to use Clip studio paint!

Let's use just one trick - layer mode!

It only takes three minutes to draw a variety of light and shadow effects!

 

For those who find it difficult to draw light and shadow, or who find it difficult to draw by hand

This electric painting function is really great news

In addition, this painting method is actually not complicated and super simple.

There is no need to do any complicated coloring and light and shadow painting.

At the beginning, you can simply draw a character

Then simply paint on its natural color

After preparing such a picture

Simply use layer mode techniques to demonstrate three different light and shadow effects.

So let’s take a look quickly

How can we use this technique to draw various light and shadow effects!

 

1. Backlighting

First, we open a layer. This layer is where we want to draw a shadow, so we first change the layer mode of this layer to [Color Enhancement], and then select the shadow color we want. Here I Choose a desaturated blue instead of gray so that the shadows don't look too gray. Next, use the paint bucket to cover the entire layer with color!

Then click on "Clip with next layer" on this shadow layer (which will make the color of the shadow appear only where the character layer below appears) and "Create Layer Mask" (so that we can modify the erased area at any time) )Effect.

Then we can start to erase the shadows around the characters with an eraser. Here I started with a blurry brush to roughly erase the shadows around the characters, and then used a sharper brush to make some details. The modification, in fact, after polishing like this, it will have a little backlight feeling!

Note: Remember to click on the all-white mask on the right side of the shadow layer when erasing! This way you won’t accidentally rub the shadow itself, which will be difficult to modify later.

 

Then we add another layer. This time the layer is to draw the backlight halo around the character, so the layer mode is set to [Solid Light], and the color of the light we want to draw is a warmer yellow, and then Select the brush tool, use a blurry brush to draw some halo around the character, and you're done!

2. Dichotomy of light and shadow

First, we open a new layer below the character layer, then select the color of the shadow, and then use the paint bucket + brush tool to draw the background shadow we want to draw. Here I use the bisection method to draw the shadow effect, because Dichotomous shadow is really a simple, crude and beautiful light and shadow painting method!

Then we add another shadow layer above the character layer. This shadow layer is mainly the shadow on the character, so select [Color Enhancement] again, and click on the layer effect of "Clip with Next Layer", and then Use the paint bucket to paint directly on the character.

Then we use an eraser to erase the shadows under the entire character where the light shines, leaving only the shadows under the nose and chin.

It would be too monotonous to erase the entire shadow, so here I am using the brush tool and choosing a sharper brush to simply paint a little shadow on the clothes and hands.

In order to make the character's eyes sharper, I simply used an eraser to draw a little reflection of light on the character's eyes to make the character's eyes look more lively.

Then open a new layer under the background shadow, choose a warmer yellow, and fill the layer directly with the paint bucket.

Because I want to make the color and atmosphere here a little warmer, and even a little contrast with the blue of the shadow, I choose a pinker color, use the brush tool, select a blurry brush, and put it on the same layer Paint a little pink on it.

In addition to the pink background, the characters will definitely be affected by sunlight, so I added a new layer on the top layer, selected the [Solid Light] layer mode, lowered the opacity, and used the brush just now With the color, simply apply it directly on the character.

That's because I want this pink ambient light to only affect the characters, so I turn on the "Clip with next layer" layer effect on this layer again, and adjust the opacity again to make the picture more natural. .

Next, I want the reflection of the eyes to be more prominent, so I add a layer on the top layer, use the [Overlay] layer mode, select a yellowish color, and use a blurry brush in the brush tool. I lightly painted on the reflection of the eyes, but at this point I felt it was a bit too abrupt!

So in the end I changed the layer mode to [Soft Light] and adjusted the unsaturation to 50, which made it feel more natural! Then this two-part light and shadow painting method is completed!

3. The light and shadow of the door crack

First, we add a shadow layer above the character layer, select [Color Enhancement], select the shadow color you want to use, and fill it directly with the paint bucket.

Then copy this shadow layer and place it on top of the character layer, and click on the layer effects of "Clip with Next Layer" and "Create Layer Mask". Remember to click on the completely white right side of this layer. Mask.

At this time, we directly use the eraser to draw the part of the door seam light on this mask, and then use the brush tool to draw shadows on the parts where shadows may appear within the door seam light range.

Next, we open a new layer at the top, select [Real Light], click on the "Clip with Next Layer" effect, and lower the opacity to about 40, select the light color we want, and then use the pen Use the brush tool, select the blur brush, and paint a little halo around the door seam. But at first I felt that the halo was a bit too big and not very natural. Later, I used an eraser to do some erasing modifications.

Then, after the overall painting was almost done, I felt that the background was not dark enough, so I chose a darker gray-blue color and filled it directly with a paint bucket on the background layer to make the contrast between light and dark stronger.

At this time, my old habit comes back, I always want to add a little more detail Block, increase the shadow under the character's eyebrows and hair.

Then use an eraser to add a little reflection to the character's eyes in the shadow, which is also used to make the character's eyes look more lively.

Finally, I added another layer on top of the layer, selected white, and used the brush tool and a sharper brush to paint a little eye reflection on the eye illuminated by the crack in the door.

Turn on the halo layer of the door crack light, and you're done!
