HOW TO DRAW PROFILES Beginner friendly
BASICS
Guidelines
When drawing profiles I start with the Basic Forms of the head so i can plan out and have a basic structure to work on . it is like mapping
1. I start with drawing a sphere doesn't have to be a perfect sphere .I don’t recommend using a ruler so you can practice having more control with your hands.
2. and a horizontal line for the eyes i also use this to indicate and help me with angles
3. A vertical line for the face usually the center of the face . The same with the horizontal line I also use this to plan out different angles.
4. And add some jawline slightly tilted it can be more sharp or soft it varies from different characters
5. And add a neck connecting to our head . The neck does curves a little since our spine is not straight yippe
Understanding about our frames or foundation enables us simplify the head into basic forms
to help us by not over complicating things .
this is very useful in a style that is more stylized
FEATURES
After I’m done with drawing the guidelines i start drawing the features of the face
usually divided into the 3 or 4 groups
their usually evenly separated in Golden Ratio
but guidelines can be push into specific style or taste and just to avoid same face syndrome by drawing all your characters in the same features and measurement .
Drawing chibi or enhancing feminine features the features gradually get less and less define or visible
ex.the chibi has smaller nose and jaw and a bigger forehead because it’s usually associated with youth
Forehead
when drawing the features I start from the top which is the forehead .when drawing the forehead remember that it curves into the nasion (between the frontal bone and nose bridge ) into the nose bridge. forehead are drawn differently depending on characters features maybe softer and have bigger forehead.
Nose
when drawing the nose we have our nasal bridge or nasal bone this is where the nose starts where the shape of the nose will begin so flatter nose bridge will make nose less define . i usually draw the nose as a half triangle with round tip ,the tip can be sharper or even lift like a button nose
Lips
when drawing the lips i usually draw the upper lips more upward going up and the lower lip going down i recommend using more dynamic shapes than a circle
Eyes
the eyes are located at the nasion or between the frontal bone and nose bridge .
also you can see on top how i put a distance between eyes and nasion it is because there’s a certain distance to give space for the root of the nose there’s also a comparison from front view so you can easily visualize it
The distance is different in different characters whether the character have close set of eyes or have wider nose bridge
Jaw motion
when the mouth open the jaw moves an arc a bit like swing direction rather than just going down the TMJ ( the temporomandibular joint ) acts as a hinge connects your jawbone to your skull
TIPS TO IMPROVE ART SKILL
3D assistant
using 3d models to help you with various angle you can create your own rather than scrolling and searching just to get the right reference . i personally use them when i struggle to get the right angle ,i can’t find any good reference ,i don’t have time or i just need ideas . i put them on the side and use them as reference and compare
CLIPS STUDIO PAINT does come with built in 3D model
CLIP STUDIO PAINT version 2.0 release some 3D head model where you can customize the features
You can also download different 3d models at CLIP STUDIO Assets store
Study other artist
I personally do this by observing and applying what i like, i watch a lot of speed drawing or drawing process just to figure out different techniques and application of other artist that might help me with my understanding
Using real people
UsIng real people for reference and studies it can be models or even yourself. it can help you build your skill in manipulating your reference to get more creative with shapes ,structure and values
i recommend figure and gesture drawing
