Illustration color selection and matching
Preface
First, describe what the illustration wants to convey,
For the main color design main goal,
Then combine the colors,
In order to distinguish the image and position it for the viewer,
The color is very striking at first sight.
▲Three primary colors of light and three primary colors of color
1. Three primary colors of light
The three primary colors of color and light are composed of RGB.
red/green/blue,
Color mixing is additive mixing,
The more colors you mix, the
The color appears increasingly whiter (brighter).
2. Three primary colors
The three primary colors are composed of CMY three colors.
cyan/magenta/yellow,
Color mixing is subtractive mixing,
The more colors you mix, the
The color is dark brown (dark).
Because it’s not dark enough,
An additional black (K) subsidy is added for printing.
Personally, before color matching,
Will first change the RGB color mode,
Convert to CMYK color mode,
First mask the black and white colors,
Then adjust the color and data of the illustration (natural colors).
The following color matching instructions are all in CMYK mode.
Explain with commonly used color matching configurations.
▲Hue/Saturation/Brightness
How to use the color wheel
First choose a main color,
Then play with the color selection of the auxiliary color,
Available in single color or multiple colors.
(1) Similar colors - hue circle 0~30 degrees
(2) Similar colors - hue circle 30~60 degrees
(3) Three-color matching--hue circle 120 degrees
(4) Contrasting colors (complementary colors)--Hue circle 180 degrees
Four-color matching and dispersed complementary color matching,
Because in the personal illustration drawing process,
In order to avoid the main color matching being too complicated,
The drawing process is easy to lose focus.
Therefore, the early stage of drawing is not taken into account.
Four-color matching and dispersed complementary color matching,
This type of color matching will be used in later editing.
To increase the variability or richness of the color of the picture.
Variability of chroma and lightness
Chroma (brightness) and value (darkness)
If the same color system is combined with the use of chroma and brightness,
The color matching of the same color series is also very changeable.
The following uses the same color system and imagery as an example.
Imagery of various aspects of color
▲Color image association (C-M-Y-K mode)
Medium light pink in red series (1-16-11-0),
White and reddish to represent the impression of young women,
And Yin Hong(33-100-86-1),
A dark red impression that can represent a river of blood.
So within the framework of concrete symbols and emotional symbols,
Yellow can be lively or bright, and can also represent gold or the sun.
Blue can be refreshing (body feeling), rational, or melancholy (emotional).
▲Color matching demonstration
(CMYK values are attached in the picture)
Observe the numerical changes of CMYK,
The patterns, similarities and differences of colors can be obtained from them.
The following color combinations are as follows:
▲Color somatosensory (C-M-Y-K mode)
Desaturated colors – a combination that’s understated and tasteful.
Cool colors--feeling cool to cold.
Dark colors - calm and mature or autumnal.
Warm colors-feel warm body feeling.
Bright colors - high-profile and bright intuitive associations.
Soft colors - an association of calmness and femininity.
Light color - a fresh combination close to white.
Saturated colors - gorgeous with a bit of vitality.
▲Color ratio configuration
Select the color configuration of the inherent color,
Main color/auxiliary color/embellished color (or printing special color) digital quantification ratio,
For example, tenths are used as divisions.
The following are the color ratios that I personally like to use:
(1)7:2:1 (or directly 8:2)
(2)6:2:2 (can also be divided into 6:3:1)
(3)5:3:2 or 4:3:3 (rich in color but highly challenging)

In terms of design and typesetting,
Will add background color,
It is subdivided into background color/main color/auxiliary color/highlight color (accent color).
▲Colorless color system
Black, white and gray are colorless colors.
To master the proportion of color matching,
It can improve the texture level of the picture.
▲Special colors (post-printing processing)
Gold and silver colors,
These two colors have a lot of room for change in post-printing processing.
It’s also a plus.
▲Style sharing of personal color matching
(1) Pastel color
Transparent texture with a cute pink feel.
(2)Elegant color
A color scheme with a bit of gray tones,
To facilitate filter adjustment before finishing the draft,
Or add a sense of thickness to the picture.
The picture above combines two color systems for coloring.
(3) Bright colors
Use the three primary colors of red, yellow and blue,
Or draw it in similar bright colors.
(4)Earth tones
All things in nature form a color system,
It’s also a mid-range color.
You will feel relaxed and comfortable psychologically,
Bring a natural sense of happiness.
▲Demonstration and explanation
A combination of elegant colors and earth tones,
Color chip combinations intentionally offset the inherent colors of the primary colors.
Carry out light and dark surface drawing/line drawing of the subject and refill the colors (divided into cold colors and warm colors).
Insert 3D background material/adjust texture and effects.
Use the dropper to absorb color -> adjust color (color).
Add textural (painting) brushes to hair and clothing.
Finally, color mixing - adding texture and special effects.
Conclusion
Pay more attention and observe the nature around you,
Because nature is our color palette!
Nature is our teacher,
Use your eyes to write down the colors that suit your eyes and apply them.
Internalize it into your own color palette.
