1.Introduction

It is no secret that flowers are one of the most beautiful things that attract attention.

Therefore, they can make a huge difference in the atmosphere and the impact of a painting.

My name is Cherry and in this tutorial I will be guiding you through the process of drawing and coloring flowers to add more appeal to your artwork.

2.The composition of flowers

In order to be able to recreate, build, or draw something, you first have to know what it is made of and how it is constructed.

In this chapter we will learn about the composition of a flower for a better understanding of what we will be drawing.

Flower composition : Petals - Leaves - Stigma (In the center) - Stamen (Around the stigma) - Buds - Stem.

3.How to Draw a leaf

Not all flowers need leaves but it surely adds to their beauty.

In this chapter I will show you how to easily draw a basic leaf and also get to know other types of leaves.

First draw the shape as shown below. (Slim towards the ends, round around the center)

The shape can change according to how slim, long or thick you want the leaf to appear so feel free to experience.

Right click on the layer and choose duplicate then flip it horizontally by clicking on (scale/rotate) and place it accordingly.

The second method for drawing a symmetrical shape is by using the ruler on the tools bar : select symmetrical ruler and place the line on where the center of the leaf would be and then start drawing.

You can change the shape of the side cut depending on how sharp or smooth you want your leaf to be.

Here are some other shapes of leaves :

4.Getting familiar with the different shapes of flower petals

One of the coolest facts about flowers is that they come in countless different types and forms which leads to a beautiful diversity of shape, color & composition that attracts the eye.

In this chapter we'll get to know some of the different shapes of flower petals and how to draw them.

In this image we have the example of :

A daisy - A Rose - A Tulip - A Lily - A sunflower.

Every flower petal can be rendered into a simple shape : circle, heart, soft edged triangle...

Understanding this and practicing it will help us in the next chapter.

5.Giving dimension to the shapes

A flower petal is a paper and so is the leaf.

In this chapter we will be applying what I like to call "The paper principle" in order to draw petals and leaves from different perspectives.

Imagine your flower petal as a thin paper and as such it can fold in the same manner.

The only difference is that a petal is weaker which leads it to get easily wrinkled and curled.

6.Breaking down the different shapes of flowers

How do we go from drawing an individual petal to achieving a complicated drawing made of several layers of petals? Deconstruction is the answer.

This same principle can be used on any other flower type you wish to draw.

After familiarizing yourself with the shapes of the petals, leaves and other components of the flower you wish to draw, you should decide from what perspective the viewer will be looking at it.

Once it has been decided, you first mark the center.

Second : Draw a circle where the outer layer of petals ends.

The same goes for other petal layers.

Trace an ax going from the center across the circles according to the perspective the flower is seen from..

Now that you have the main shape of the flower, apply the paper principle to your petals, bending them towards the center (Or against it, depending on the flower shape).

Finally, add the remaining details.

Keep in mind that these are simple guidelines which means that you have the freedom to alter some angles or trespass them to avoid having a stiff drawing.

7.Let's draw a flower bouquet

Following the previous steps you can now make your own flower bouquet.

The more leaves the better : I added different shapes of leaves to fill the void and to add some appeal.

I also chose variety of different flower types because it will give us a nice variety of color.

Once you have your bouquet pick the lasso tool and trace over the edges of the lines art in order to fill in the inside.

If you have a clean line art, you can simple choose the auto select tool and then select the outer area (The empty space in the canvas/Background) and then click inverse selection.

Finally, using the bucket tool, fill your selection on a different layer.

Next : Create a layer on top of the colored silhouette and under the line art and then clip it.

The clipping mask allows your strokes to remain within the selection.

After that color the flowers according to your taste using Clip studio's default hard edged brush.

Create a new layer on top and use the clipping mask again.

On this layer lay down your shadows on the areas where the light doesn't reach as much.

Personally, I use a soft edged brush and then blended it to make a softer edge to give the illusion of a normal color transition.

For blending : Select Clip studio tool 'Blend' on the tools bar and blend until you have a good color transition from the flat color to the shadow color.

Now create a different layer on top of the line art layer and clip it.

Color the line art accordingly.

Create another layer on top of the shadow layer, clip it and lay the highlights using the same soft edged brush.

Merge everything.

Create another layer on top and fix the lines and gaps in the drawing.

Merge everything.

Go up to edit : Tonal correction : Hue/saturation : Play with the saturation/hue and luminosity according to your taste.

Create another layer.

Set it to : Glow dodge or Add (Glow) and turn off the opacity to 15%

Now : Using a soft brush, add some glow to the top of the flower petals and leaves.

On the tools bar you can find a decoration set from you which you can choose different effects

and a complete flower set to use.

And now you have your bouquet ready for display.

8.Bonus tip

The reason I first started using Clip studio paint was the massive library from which you can download countless assets.

Feel free to try different things (Frames, bouquet, ...) using these assets by going over to clip studio paint website and then clicking materials and then type the word you're searching for.

Click on your favorite, and then download and use.

After you have downloaded your item, go to the materials bar, click on the asset, drag it over to your canvas and release.

Click on scale/rotate to adjust the size and position.

You can either choose an already colored version or not.

In case you go with the non colored version : make sure your asset is in png form.

If not : Set the layer to 'multiply' mode in order to keep the lines while coloring.

Proceed with your coloring as previously shown.

Thank you for reaching this far. I hope this tutorial has benefited you in one way or another.
