Perspective is an essential technique for drawing backgrounds. But...

・I understand the knowledge, but how do I apply it to my own illustrations?

・When the composition becomes even slightly complex, I don't know where to place vanishing points or how to draw lines.

――Are you struggling with these issues?

Even if you understand perspective, you might find it difficult when actually drawing an illustration.

So, this time, we will introduce how to draw a triangular attic room with a skylight using these two tools:

・CLIPSTUDIO PAINT's (Clip Studio) 'Perspective Ruler'

・Clip Studio's standard 3D primitive 'Cube'

You can draw a beautiful isosceles triangle roof, so please check it out.

① Import a 3D Primitive

Import Clip Studio's standard 3D primitive 'Cube' onto the canvas where you've drawn your rough sketch.

・Select the cube → Tool Property → Alpha to semi-transparent → Opacity to 50

・Uncheck 'Receive light source effects' and 'Display shadow on floor plane'

・Window → Sub Tool Detail

・Sub Tool Detail → Placement

・Change Position Y to -35, Overall Rotation Z to -45.

The red lines serve as a guide for the roof and floor.

Operate the camera to align the cube with the floor and roof parts of your rough sketch.

② Add a Perspective Ruler

Click the red square frame on the cube layer to display the ruler.

Next, use the 'Perspective Ruler' tool to draw perspective lines on the slanted parts of the cube's roof (total of 4 lines).

③ Draw the Line Art

Now you are ready to draw the lines of the building.

In this state, you will draw the interior of the attic room.

Since the perspective ruler is enabled, you can draw a beautiful isosceles triangular attic.

Also, by adding 3D materials, you can incorporate them onto the canvas with perspective applied.

Once you have finished drawing the rough line art for the interior, hide only the cube in the object list, and also hide the perspective ruler.

Then, add detailed elements for figures and the interior.

④ Coloring and Finishing

Once the entire coloring is complete, display the perspective ruler one last time.

Then, add a luminescence layer and draw in starlight.

Since the perspective ruler is active, you can draw straight starlight along the angle of the roof.

Finished!

Everyone, please try drawing backgrounds using the perspective ruler!
