This time, we will introduce the web-based manga format "Webtoon".

What is Webtoon?

To put it simply, it is a "vertical reading manga".

Webtoon is a digital comic format.

It is called Webtoon as a coined word of Web + Cartoon.

【Characteristic】

・ Vertical scroll format (vertical reading style)

・ Full color

Readability on smartphones and PCs is important.

Because there is no printing or bookbinding, there are no rules specific to manga manuscripts.

Example) ◎ No inner frame or cutting line

◎ Page Free

◎ Canvas size free

◎ Free resolution

Also, since the amount of image data is small, it is suitable for mobile production.

It is recommended because it is a format that is easy for people who want to draw manga for the first time.

Now, let's draw using CLIPSTUDIO PAINT's function!

Step 1: Preparing the canvas for Webtoon

CLIPSTUDIO PAINT has settings for Webtoon.

Create new (Ctrl + N)

Use of work: Illustration

Preset (S): Select “comico (690 × 20000px)” and click OK.

  • "Comico" is the name of the Webtoon portal in Japan.

設定 Webtoon settings customized for posting to here.

A new elongated canvas like this is created.

Step 2: Draw a door picture

-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------[Display and setting of grid lines]

Check [View (V)] → [Grid (G)] from the menu bar, and then

Opens the [Grid Ruler Settings] window.

In the initial setting, such a line is drawn, so change the grid setting.

Initial setting

Interval (D): A thick line (grid line) is drawn every 100px.

Number of divisions (I): Divide the grid lines by four.

-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------【change】

When the canvas is assumed to be a book, the aspect ratio of the international standard size A and B versions is √2 when the short side is 1 and the long side is 1.

This canvas is 690px horizontally, so the vertical size is

Since 690 x {2 = 975.807 ...}, enter 976 for the grid line spacing.

The number of divisions is free, but I chose 10 for easy understanding.

I'm a little worried about the balance of the vertical lines, so I'll raise the number of intervals a little.

(Because the book is not actually bound, I think there is no problem if the numerical values are captured intuitively)

Here, it is 985px. Click OK when you are done.

Grid lines (thick lines) are displayed at regular intervals.

This line continues at regular intervals all the way down.

I think it will be easier to draw if you think that the line (= color display part) is one page.

I think that it is easy to understand when writing the title and author name and when drawing the door picture!

Step 3: Draw the text / manga

Next, let's draw a manga.

Again, it is useful to be able to see the grid lines.

I think Webtoon is a legible range of about 1-3 frames in this virtual one page.

Anyway, the cartoon part is free.

Considering the readability on the Web, I think that the feeling of drawing a one-cut animation is closer to that of comics (MANGA).

In fact, some Webtoon works also include expressions such as a part of the manga being animated or sound being played.

Step 3: Text size of dialogue

The size of the text input text is expressed in units of "pt (point)".

Since Webtoon has freedom in the canvas size, the font size also needs to be adjusted.

Reference: Text input [Details of sub tool]

-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------・ As an aside, for manga to be bound, there are approximate rules for font size.

Example) Monochrome manuscript, book size B5 (magazine)

     Canvas: 4299 × 6071px / resolution 600dpi: Font is based on 11pt

↓ When displayed on the web, one character is about this size.

Since the resolution is a numerical value required for printing, it is not necessary to increase the numerical value for images viewed only on the web.

Therefore, it is often set to 72dpi in Webtoon.

However, if the resolution changes, the display will change at the same 11pt.

In this way, it becomes very small.

Keep in mind that the display changes even with the same pt, and pay attention to the size of the dialogue.

In this canvas (690px / 72dpi width), I set it to 30pt.

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------

In the actual canvas size, it is displayed at this size.

It feels a little bigger on a PC, but it is more effective than a small and unreadable, so depending on the size of the device, I hope it will be easier to read.

If you find this easy to read,

If the canvas width is 690px and the resolution is 72dpi, it will be easier if you keep 30pt as the standard.

With the above, I think that you can grasp the basics of the sense of the size of the picture and character.

Then, draw freely and try to create a wonderful work!

Technique 1: Copy and paste dialogue using story editor!

  • "Story editor" is a function exclusively for CLIP STUDIO PAINT [EX].

! You can enter lines in batch!

Click [Page Management] → [Edit Text (Z)] → [Open Story Editor (O)]

The Story Editor window opens.

(1) Copy the lines entered using a text editor (Notepad).

② Paste it into the "story editor".

Each line break is entered as a separate line at once.

Then, the dialogue is also displayed on the canvas.

The position of the dialogue can be moved freely.

《How to modify text》

After changing the tool properties of the text tool, select the text box of the story editor by Shift + click.

You can change it by page management ⇒ text editing ⇒ applying tool properties to text.

Small Technique 2: Overall Check

For portrait documents, it is difficult to check the entire canvas.

Therefore, I will introduce how to check the canvas by displaying it in multiple windows using a new window.

Select [Window (W)] → [Canvas (V)] → [New Window (V)] from the menu bar.

The same canvas can be displayed in multiple windows.

If one is displayed in another window, you can check the whole while drawing.

Thank you for watching until the end.

I hope this tutorial is useful for your manga production.
