How to make Monochrome Concept Art.
Introduction.
Hello everyone I am Jumep, for this occasion I would like to show you how I do a concept art in monochrome, using layers of plot and inking.
Before doing concept art I think about a specific theme to guide what I want to draw, in this case I take as a basis the technological advances and the price we must pay for it, ok it sounds somewhat dark, but it is in the framework of "Scifi" .
New file and sketch.
Depending on how we are going to work we can configure the canvas when creating it, for this I go to [File] - [New], once the configurations for the new canvas are opened in the part that says [Basic expression color] we can choose between [Color], [Gray] and [Monochromatic] in this way if we choose [Gray] all the layers we create will be configured in that [Basic expression color]
To make the sketch I use the [Pencil] tool, then I show the configuration:
In creating the sketch I use three stages, first I sketch the pose, second I draw details to reflect the theme I chose and third with the same tool [Pencil] I do a cleaner sketch. This sketch process varies according to the drawing style of each one.
Well I already have my sketch, the next step is to make a clean line art, but before doing it I save the ones of the sketch in a [folder], then I go to [Layer property] and I click on [Layer color] and I leave it blue so it will be easier to follow the lines when doing line art.
Line Art.
To do the linear I use the [Pen] tool specifically I use a custom [G-pen], the configuration I use is this:
Now that I have the layer of my blue sketch I can easily make the line art.
There is a tool that I really like about the Studio Clip EX that can be very useful to save time and to make the illustrations look better, I talk about the tool [Ruler] - [Symmetric ruler]
My drawing has a mechanical arm, and the antearm has a shape in which I can use the ruler so that it is a perfect and symmetrical shape.
1 I click the [Ruler] tool icon and select [Symmetric Ruler]
2 trace the ruler along the forearm so that it is right in the middle.
3 I use the [Pen] to draw on one side of the ruler, that way everything I draw on that side will also be automatically drawn on the other side.
Since I only used the rule for the line art of the forearm I will no longer need it so I deactivate it.
1 select the layer where I placed the [Ruler] and click on the ruler icon.
2 I uncheck the option that says [Show only when target is edited].
3 The rule is now deactivated and I can activate it in the same way if I wanted to use it again.
Once the line art of the drawing is finished, I make a folder and save all the layers I used in the outline, but there was a lot of space on the canvas that was not used.
What I will do now is adjust the drawing to occupy the rest of the canvas, for this I select the folder that contains all the layers and click [Edit] - [Transform] - [Scale + / Scale- / Rotate ...]. Which can also be done with the command (Ctrl + T).
I click on one of the corners of the edit box and drag it to the size I want to fill the entire canvas.
Now what I do is unify all the layers so that there is only one, for this I select the folder where the layers are and go to the [Layer] option and select [Merge selected layers].
I will name the resulting layer “Scifi-Ink” and set it as [reference layer] by clicking on the lighthouse icon.
This is the Line art:
Tip of the [Draft].
Now that I have my drawing ready I am going to ink some of his clothes and give him patterns, but before that I will show you the technique I use to make the patterns. When I'm going to make Patterns first I make a [Fill] in gray and then I convert that layer into patterns, and to give it light effects I use the tool [Eraser] - [Soft]
When we use the soft eraser it gives a gradient effect that we can use to make light and volume effects.
Hatched and inked.
Now I make the gradient of the legs of the drawing, first I make a new layer, then with the [Automatic selection] tool I select the area of the legs, as before I had established the line art layer as reference layer use [selection of referred layers ]
Then with the [Gradient] tool I give it gray from the bottom up.
Now in [Layer Properties] I click [Raster]
With the [Eraser] tool I make a few small details for the brightness.
For the helmet I do almost the same process, I create a new layer and here I use the [Selection] - [Polyline] tool so I effectively select the area that corresponds to the helmet, then click [Fill].
In [combination mode] of the layer I set it to [Multiplication], so you can see the drawing behind the fill.
Again in [Layer Properties] I click on [Screen] and with the [Eraser] - [Soft] I go through the edges of the helmet to make gradient light effects.
On the shoulder of the mechanical arm with the [Fill] tool I give it gray tones, then with the [Eraser] - [Soft] tool I make it shine.
In [Layer Properties] I click [Screen]. I like how it looks with the plot effect, it gives it a more Manga style.
For the mechanical hand I do exactly the same process.
So far I have used the [Layer Properties] to make patterns and effects for the helmet, mechanical arm, and legs.
For the pants and the suit I want to make a complete inking with light effects which I do with two tools, [Pen] and [Eraser]. At first the line art layer was set as a reference layer which will be very helpful now.
but first I create a new layer, then I go to the tool [Fill] - [Refer other layers] and in the [Tool properties] I click on the icon [Reference layer].
This way it is not necessary to use the selection tool, I just click in the pants area and fill it with black.
To make large areas of light on black, I use [Eraser] - [Stronger].
And to make the little details I use the [Pen] [G-pen] tool with white I make lines on the black parts.
In the upper part of the suit I repeat the same process, [Fill] with black, with the [Eraser] I make the light effects large and with the [Pen] I make the small details with white.
Well I'm almost done, now follow the spherical container of the flower that holds the character, in one layer I make the details of the flower and turn it into [Plot].
Now I make a new layer for the container. With the [Automatic Selection] tool I select the circular area of the container, then click [Fill].
Just as I did with the helmet effects, with the [Eraser] [Soft] tool I make light effects in the contour and in the center of the circle.
In [Layer Properties] I click [Screen] and in [combination mode] of the layer I set it to [Multiplication].
It's the same as the [draft] tip I made at the beginning.
With a couple of tweaks we have finished with monochrome concept art.
Monochromatic drawings have their own identity and style that expresses beauty in art. I hope you find my method of making hatches and inks layers interesting and useful. Thanks for reading until the end and until next time.
