How to use the selection range in CLIP STUDIO PAINT,

We will introduce four useful functions.

We have also prepared a video, so if you can understand Japanese, please take a look.

Basic knowledge of selection ranges

A selection range is an area that you arbitrarily select.

This is the part indicated by the dotted line.

In this state, if you try to draw outside the dotted line, you will not be able to draw anything.

When there is a selection, you can only draw within the selection.

Use this when you want to edit only a part of the canvas, or when you want to copy or cut out.

How to create a selection range

Selection ranges can be created in various ways.

First, I will introduce the [selection area] tool.

The [Rectangular selection] sub tool allows you to create a rectangular selection by dragging the canvas diagonally.

Hold down the Shift key while dragging to make a square selection.

The [Ellipse selection] sub tool allows you to create an elliptical selection range by dragging the canvas diagonally.

Hold down the Shift key while dragging to make a perfect circle selection.

By dragging the [Lasso selection] sub tool along the area you want to select, you can create a selection range of the dragged shape.

[Polyline selection] sub tool You can create a polyline selection range. A corner is created at each location you tap, and a selection is created when you double-tap or tap the starting point.

You can cancel all selections by pressing the [Esc] key.

Press the [Delete] key to cancel the previous corner specification.

Quoted from CLIP STUDIO PAINT User Guide

Also, it is easier to use if you set the tool property creation method to [Additional selection].

You can make more selections.

The default setting is [Create new],

Creating a new selection erases the previous selection.

How is it useful to use selection ranges? I will explain it now!

How to use selection ranges

If you select [Edit] menu → [Change line color to drawing color] while there is a selection area,

The color will change to the drawing color only for the part within the selection range.

This is useful when you want to color trace only a part of a line drawing layer.

If you execute [Change line color to drawing color] without a selection,

The color of the entire drawing range of the layer will change.

Gradient map layer with selection range

When you create a solid color layer, etc.

It is created with only the area depicted.

Next, we will introduce four useful functions of selection range!

Convenient selection function ① Selection layer

This is a PRO/EX-only feature, but you can keep the selection range you created. **

If you select the [Selection area] menu → [Stock selection area], the selection area will be converted to a selection layer.

If you select [Stock Selection] without a selection,

An empty selection layer is created.

A selection layer is like a normal layer,

You can draw with a pen or fill.

When you select [Selection] menu → [Restore selection from stock],

You can Create a selection from a selection layer.

It is also recommended to register [Stock selection range] in the selection range launcher.

The selection range launcher is also introduced in this article, so

Please read it.

Click on the green square part of the selection layer,

Alternatively, you can also create a selection from the [Layer] menu → [Selection from layer] → [Create selection].

How to use a selection layer:

With tone pasting assistant

``I don't have time to specify the tone pattern, so I just layered the selected area of the character's hair and clothes first.

I'll create it and then configure it later.''

You can also create selections from regular layers, but

It is convenient because you can immediately convert the selected range, and even if you forget to hide it, it will not be affected when you export it.

Forgetting to hide instruction layers or unnecessary layers

Mistakes in writing are quite common.

The green layer is not displayed in the exported image!

Convenient selection function ② Quick mask

This is also a PRO/EX-only feature, but

Quick masks can be created using a pen or fill tool.

You can draw and create selections.

Add a gradation to the quick mask layer,

You can also draw with an airbrush.

Select the [Selection area] menu → [Quick mask] again to convert the contents drawn in the quick mask to a selection area. The quick mask is removed at the same time as it is converted to a selection.

Then draw and edit as you like.

Use this when it is difficult to create an arbitrary selection range using only rectangular selection or lasso selection.

Quoted from CLIP STUDIO PAINT User Guide

Let me show you how convenient quick masks are.

You can easily paste the tone on the part where the line is cut.

If you fill it in normally, it will stick out...

Create a quick mask, close the line, fill it, and release the quick mask.

Then select [New Tone] in the selection range launcher.

A simple tone setting dialog will be displayed.

Set the number of lines etc. and click the OK button!

Without creating a new layer to fill in gaps between lines,

I was able to apply the tone easily.

When separating layers, do you sometimes paint in flashy colors to avoid forgetting to paint?

The layer mask is already set to a bright red color with an opacity of 45, so there's no need for that.

When you want to fill only part of a layer, you can quickly create a selection area,

When you want to add more drawings, you don't have to create a new layer and can work without interfering with other layers.

It is used quite frequently in both color illustrations and black and white comics.

I think this is an essential feature for efficient work.

Convenient selection function ③ Selection from layer

I also mentioned this in the selection layer section.

It's literally a function to create a selection from a layer, but it can be used in a variety of ways.

If you hold down Ctrl and click on the layer icon,

A selection is created from the drawn portion of the layer.

Alternatively, you can create a selection from the drawing area of the selected layer by selecting [Layer] menu → [Selection from layer] → [Create selection].

I assign a shortcut key to [Create selection area] so that I can immediately create a selection area of the drawing area from the selection layer or from the normal layer.

When creating a selection from a tone layer,

If you use [Create selection area], the halftone dots will be selected.

If you want to create a selection range with a tone pasted,

Click on the icon for the mask part of the layer.

How to use this is to check the sky layer.

What is this layer? I can't tell what is drawn where at first glance, but can I erase it?

In such a case, create a selection range from the layer.

When the selection range or selection range launcher appears,

That layer has a drawing part.

If it is not displayed, it means that no selection has been created from the layer = nothing is drawn on the layer, so you can delete the layer without any worries.

Make sure to turn on the display of the selection range launcher.

This can be set in the [Display] menu.

Convenient selection function ④ Color gamut selection

Color gamut selection is a function that allows you to select only parts of any color.

I painted everything on the same layer, but I want to edit only the red part...In such a case, use color gamut selection!

When you select [Selection range] menu → [Color gamut selection], the [Color gamut selection] dialog will be displayed. You can create a selection range by setting detailed conditions and specifying the color you want to select from the canvas by tapping it.

Quoted from CLIP STUDIO PAINT User Guide

When you click on the red part, a selection range is created for that color range.

[Color Tolerance] refers to other colors as the value increases. I think around 10 is fine.

Press [OK] to return to the canvas and work.

It is recommended because you can edit any part later without increasing the number of layers.

At the end

The above are the ways to use the selection range and 4 useful functions.

How was that?

There were some difficult parts and some functions that could only be used with PRO/EX, but

Try incorporating it little by little as much as you can.
