Hello! Let's talk about winter clothing, we are already in December and it brings with it cold weather and what better way to adapt our illustrations or oc's. In this tutorial I will share some details about winter clothing illustration, you will see that it is easier than you think! Come with me and learn how to create cozy coats and use knitting patterns from Clip Studio assets that can be used for many things not just winter clothes ;D.

Step 1. Choose what clothes our character will wear

For the first step we must identify what clothing for the cold we want to use, it is very important that we have a previous idea, a context in our illustrations, in order to better understand our vision and we also want the clothes she wears to look pretty, here I have given you some examples of clothing and accessory styles (you can look at many more on reference pages).

As we can see, there are many styles of clothing for winter because these are just a few examples that we could categorize as:

  • Coats

  • Accessories

Step 1.1. Wrinkles and Folds

Wrinkles and folds are essential elements for illustrating winter clothing due to their characteristics. Winter clothing tends to be looser and thicker than regular clothing, as it is specifically designed to protect against the cold. The more wrinkles and folds incorporated, the larger the garment will appear. It is crucial to carefully manage the amount of these folds, as too much can result in an unnatural and unsightly look.

Step 2. Coats

Now let's look at the procedure for certain types of coats, using the folds in the areas where the fabric flexes and falls due to gravity.

Step 2.1. Edges coats

There are some types of coats that will generally have edges that delimit their holes, prevent tears and make them much more aesthetic 🙀.

Step 2.2. hair coats

Making hair or hair in itself can be torture, a job that requires a lot of knowledge and making hair hair by hair does not look good at all and is very complicated, to simplify this work a lot we can use a tool created by me! FREE FIND ON CLIP STUDIO ASSETS! (remember to like 😺)

Name: hair brush winter clothing

ID: 2048297

With this tool we can achieve what we need and it would look something like this:

First we apply a base color, then I usually use these brushes between 50”% and 90% opacity (remember to make a layer with adjustment to lower layer above the layer with the base color). By controlling the light and shadow a little we can create hair for our coats (it even works for animals c;)

If we add a lineart with any lineart brush:

Put into practice in an illustration:

Step 2.3. Color coats

Depending on the type, some fur or leather coats have considerable stains that are impossible to ignore in their aesthetics, something that we must undoubtedly implement to make them look more attractive and organic, this can be achieved using many clip studio paint tools but one of my favorite tools It is the spray airbrush and it is also quite easy to use :o

Depending on our needs we can modify its properties, here I show you the process of a coat with color:

Step 3. Gloves

Winter gloves make the fingers look rounder at the tip, something to keep in mind if we want to draw gloves for the cold, we must make a sketch of the hands and round the tips of the fingers to give this sensation of a glove for the cold. cold although of course there are different types of gloves.

It is necessary to keep in mind that gloves without details and only with a base color appear unattractive, to make a better illustration we must add details to these, SMALL DETAILS MATTER!!!!

Step 4. Scarves

When drawing a scarf we must think of it as a ribbon, this way we will achieve better results.

Another relevant thing to keep in mind is the position, there are many positions in which to accommodate a scarf, here are the three most common:

Step 4.1. Patterns

The scarves have many types of patterns or embroidery, here I leave one that I have applied with a default Clip Studio asset THE DECORATION SUBTOOL WILL BE OUR BEST FRIEND when we have to add these details, I found it quite beautiful and easy to implement , we can use the lower layer setting to feel calmer while trying out different styles.

Step 5. Hats and implementation

Let's see the hats and some of the previous tips applied, the hats are quite simple and for them to look good they depend on two things that we have already seen, the edges, the folds and wrinkles! The fabric does not have to be static, we can use physics in our favor! To add movement we can help ourselves with some guide lines that will be very useful, here I leave an example of how to make them, the design depends on how creative you are :D (I have tried to make a version of the hat at the end hehe).

Finally, we have some examples of patterns on clothing, which we can perfect with the selection transformation tool with the shortcut ctrl+shif+t and the liquify tool (this pattern is taken from Clip Studio Assets).

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed this winter clothes drawing tutorial!!!

Remember to practice and experiment with different styles, these are just basic concepts, “rules are meant to be broken.”
