Before starting

This TIPS contains Clip Studio's features to increase work efficiency!

Recommended for beginners who are just starting out or intermediate users who are having trouble.

TIPS for beginners who are new to Clip Studio

If it's your first time but you want to set up like a pro, there are several ways to do it.

First, let’s take a look at the settings.

Let’s create your own Clip Studio!

interface custom

Wow, is this Clip Studio?

If you don't like the black interface or need your own color, try customizing it.

Or you can increase the size of the button.

1) Click File (F) - Settings (E) to open the settings window.

2) You can change the Clip Studio window to various brightnesses from black - gray - white by clicking the interface window. (By default, the default color is set to dark because black makes it easier to focus on the picture.)

Increase number of undos

Most mistakes you want to turn back in time can be resolved if you can do so 200 times.

1) In the settings window, this time click Performance. You can increase the number of undos up to 200 times.

Improved Clip Studio performance

When your computer isn't that good, or when you just want to focus on drawing!

Try allocating more memory to Clip Studio.

1) Adjust the allocation from performance to application.

+ If you have multiple drives, it is recommended to select a drive with a larger disk capacity for ‘Virtual memory creation location (D)’.

Auto-save (restore) settings

Clip Studio is turned off, but the last save was made 4 hours ago... Let's save it automatically to prevent the sad situation from happening. I recommend it to anyone who has trouble with the restore window popping up too often!

1) Click on the file, check ‘Enable restoration of canvas’ and set the restoration interval.

The restore interval can be set from 5 to 60 minutes.

TIPS for intermediate users who get stuck

Do I always have to do this like this? I've completed the painting despite going through a difficult process, but maybe next time I'll be able to solve it easily!

Let’s become a fun illustrator by drawing simple pictures.

Change ruler/grid color and opacity

When the ruler is too dark and bothers you when drawing, try changing the transparency and color of the ruler.

1) Click File (F) - Settings (E) to open the settings.

2) You can change the color of the ruler and grid in Ruler/Unit. If you want to make it transparent all at once, adjusting the opacity is also a good idea.

Grid (area division)

But, what is grid..?

Have you ever drawn a line yourself when you had to divide a picture into three parts? Try using a grid when you want lines to be displayed like a camera.

1) Press Mark (V) - Grid (G) to select the grid.

2) If you want to change the grid spacing, press Grid/Ruler Settings (N).

3) You can set the interval and number of divisions. Spacing refers to the spacing between thick lines, and the number of divisions refers to the number of thin lines within the thick line.

If the grid is not divided evenly because the size of the canvas is not exactly the same, it is a good idea to center the origin.

Adding display scale

Does it zoom in too big or too small? You can enlarge it to exactly the magnification you want.

1) You can add magnification by clicking Canvas in Preferences.

2) You can set the rotation value at the display angle on the right.

Convert luminance to transparency

When you download a material but the background is annoying, or when you want to color a hand-drawn drawing in a way other than a multiplier layer. You can erase ‘white’!

1) Click Edit (E) - Convert luminance to transparency (B).

You can see that the white part has disappeared and only the black part remains. The gray area has become translucent. This is especially useful when you scan paper and want to leave only pencil lines.

Color gamut selection

It's like plain auto-select, but more convenient! You can use it when you merge layers and want to select a specific color part.

1) Press Selection Range (S) - Select Color Gamut (C).

2) Adjust the color tolerance, set how similar colors to select, and click the color to select on the canvas. You can easily reset it and specify the color you want.

I selected the lines and separated them.

Correction with tone curve

When dark parts should become darker and light parts should become lighter. If you want to correct saturation, brightness, and contrast at once, how about using a tone curve?

1) Press Edit (E) - Tone Correction (D) - Tone Curve (T).

2) You can adjust the overall color/red/blue/green level of the current layer.

You can click on a line to create a new control point or adjust it. Try adjusting this and that to find the desired value.

Load Clip Studio file into sub view

The process of converting a drawing into png and loading it into the sub view is complicated. If you can tolerate a slightly larger file size, let's insert the Clip Studio picture file as is!

1) Click Window (W) - Sub View (U).

2) Click the import button under the sub view to import the Clip Studio picture file.

+ Refreshing a subview does not save changes to the canvas.

+ Clicking ‘Open Image on Canvas’ next to Import will open the Clip Studio file itself with its layers intact.

New window (showing the same picture)

There comes a time when a navigator or a sub view is not enough. I recommend this to anyone who wants to upload another picture they were drawing but also want to be able to edit it in real time!

1) Click Window (W) - Canvas (V) - New Window (N).

2) Another same canvas opens. Edits are shared immediately but can be scaled separately.

Split layer window into two

I have to go back and forth between the highest and lowest layers, but there are 200 layers?

You can open two windows!

1) Click the Split button on the left of the layer window. A movable center line appears and the layer window is divided into two.

Change canvas thumbnail size

Don’t you think it would be easier to see if the length, rather than the number of layers, was slightly reduced? If you have a thumbnail or your thumbnail is too small, try this method!

1) Right-click any layer and press Thumbnail Size (S).

You can set the layer thumbnail size.

Additional TIP) Press Shift+Ctrl and click the layer you are looking for on the canvas! You can find the layer right away.

Adjusting each part of a 3D doll

My drawing needs to have very long legs, and basic 3D is a method I use when I'm being too honest.

1) Setting Tool Properties[Object] - Click Drawing Doll.

2) You can set the ratio of head / neck / shoulders, etc.

+ If the 3D layer is not selected, press Object (shortcut key O). The 3D layer can only be adjusted with the object tool.

This is also useful if you want to reduce your head and neck to make your hands more visible.

Batch save

This method reduces the hassle of saving dozens of pictures one by one when working on webtoons / multiple illustrations / animations. Maybe it's similar to rendering for exporting video!

Batch save settings are slightly different for each webtoon/animation.

1) For webtoons, click File (F) - Export multiple pages (Y) - Batch export (R).

For animation, click File (F) - Export Animation (Y) - Serial Number Image (I).

The serial number image on the animation side is relatively complicated, so I will explain it here.

2) Specify the export location and set the file name, etc.

Each file name is determined by ‘File name: (name)(separator character)(starting number~)’.

+ It is recommended to create a separate folder to export and then designate that as the export location. If it is mixed with existing files, it will be difficult to distinguish them.

finish

What is this feature? We need this feature, right? Please look through all the windows with this thought in mind. In addition, Clip Studio has many other features.

Become a happy artist who can think of the batch save function when you suddenly need to save hundreds of images as pngs instead of gifs!
