Extremely flexible layer effects
This article is based on the tablet version of Clip Studio Paint.
PC users should refer to the explanation for Studio Mode.
The layout of menu commands may vary in the smartphone version.
Applying effects to layers
You can use Layer Properties to set various effects for each of your layers.
Studio Mode
Select the desired layer, then tap on the icon of the effect you want to apply or choose it from the dropdown menu.
Border effect: An outline is added to illustrations, text, and materials.
Extract line [EX]: Extracts and displays the lines from the layer.
Tone: You can create tones (black and white dots like in comics and manga) out of the image in the layer.
Display decrease color: Preview the image material and 3D layer in gray or monochrome.
Overlay texture: Add textures to the image material layer.
Layer color: Explained in "Replace the content of the layer with a different color".
Detailed settings options are displayed in the Layer Property palette, where you can adjust the intensity of the effect.
Note: You can also apply border effects, tones, and layer colors to layer folders, in which case the effect will be applied to all the layers within that folder.

Simple Mode
One of the effects that you can apply to layers is Border.
You can use Border to add outlines to illustrations and text drawn on a layer. This effect is useful when you want to make a character or a sound effect stand out.
Tap on the desired layer in the Layer palette and choose Border from the menu. Turning on Border will add an outline that you can customize by adjusting the thickness, color, and more.
Replace the content of the layer with a different color
The Layer color is one of the settings that can be set from the Layer property palette.
This is helpful when reviewing specific layer contents while working, such as when adjusting the color of a sketch or tone.
Studio Mode
If the expression color of the layer is set to Gray or Monochrome, parts drawn in Black will be replaced with the ① layer color, and parts drawn in White will be replaced with the ② sub color.
Note: When the expression color is set to color, colors closer to black will be closer to the layer color, and colors closer to white will be closer to the sub color.

Simple Mode
Layer color cannot be used in Simple Mode. Please switch to Studio Mode before using it.
Specify the blending mode of the layer
Blending modes let you control how a selected layer blends with the layer below it. It is possible to express light and shadow and color shading in ways that are unique to the digital realm.

Studio Mode
Select a layer from the Layer palette and then select an effect from the Layer palette's blending modes. The name of the selected blending mode appears next to the layer's opacity.
Simple Mode
Select the layer from the Layer palette and select an effect from the menu. The name of the selected blend mode appears next to the layer's thumbnail.
Extracting line art from a photo
You can convert photo data into line art, which can be easily edited digitally.
It is convenient when you want to edit a landscape photo and use it as a background for a manga or digitally color a drawing done with traditional mediums.
Studio Mode
Open a photo in Clip Studio Paint (EX) and with the photo layer selected, tap Layer Property palette > Extract line. This will display the settings for extracting lines.
Note: Turning off Extract line will return it to its original state.
Note: When you tap Convert layer to lines and tones, you can extract not only the lines, but also the colors and shadows in grayscale. This is useful when you want to use it as a background for a manga or as line art for an illustration.

Simple Mode
If you press and hold Add Layer , then take a picture or upload an image from your photo library, the pop-up menu Extract lines will appear. Tap Extract lines to proceed.
