HOW TO MAKE A 3D HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARD

INTRODUCTION

Hello, everyone. This is Nightshade from BM7Creations. This is how I made this birthday card with Clip Studio Paint and Blender.

My co-worker Max’d Fox was able to turn the card into an interactive video on the Godot Engine. Follow if you would like a tutorial about that.

SKETCH & LINE

Start with a rough sketch of the illustration, then line it with the G-pen tool. Setting the stabilization to adjust with speed.

To make balloons make a circle, then erase a little on the bottom for the nib, after doing that take the selection tool to duplicate the shape.

For this lettering, I used the Snowdrift font and adjust it to size.

I use the linear ruler tool to make the shape of the cake and add the frosting with the texture pen.

I make a curve for the base of the frosting and replicate the movement on top.

COLOR

On the layer beneath the Snowdrift font, I use the G-pen and colored the background white.

To make confetti you can either make it by hand or download the confetti flyer pattern.

To color the balloons, I paint them with the water-color splash brush, then neatly erase the excess.

I paint the background two colors, pale blue and neon green.

ASSETS/MATERIALS

To add texture to the skin, I add the watercolor paper texture and set it to overlay on the color layer.

Then I add the Crinkled paper texture to the background

And to the cake layer, I add the Woven grain- real paper texture.

BLENDER

To make the birthday card 3D, I open Blender and change the Z scale to 0.001.

After changing the Z scale on the lower right-hand side, I duplicated the layer three times, one for the front and one for the back, and the third, into a thin line to make a spine.

For controlled lighting, I disable the world scene, so I could manually adjust the lighting.

I rotate the three selected objects -90 degrees and lift it above the ground, to give room to build a set.

I select the front faces of the top object and open UV unwrapping, after hitting A to select all available subdivisions, I import the images I created in Clip Studio Paint.

Scale the selected object seen on the bottom left until the size matches the image.

After UV unwrapping all faces of the objects, I open the material tab for each face, I select NEW MATERIAL, and hit BASE COLOR, to change it into the image texture.

After the card is finished, I open the material tab for the spine of the card, using the eye-drop tool I select a color matching the images seen on the card.

Hit Render and then click Render Animation and Voila!
