20 Ways to Paint with Line Only
Hi, I am back with another India Ink Tutorial. Today we gonna talk more about Lines and India Ink by the way. I make everything easy for you, it's gonna be great for being India Ink tutorial reference. Well, I put 20 styles on this tutorial. And I believe you can add more after reading all this tutorial.
I used Original Clip Studio Brushes and add some of mine, you can download it at the link below. It's the same brush with the previous tutorial brush I used, so if you already have, just let's go!
Everything I made with Line only, I use Hipster man as the main object cause the man has thick whiskers and tidy hairs, I love the hipster fashion style. hoho
LINE BASIC
There are 7 basic technique if you using the line. Learn to control your hand to use this basic line, and soon you can be fluent. This Basic line is very important, especially for you who want/already use the line as your main style.
"Don't you know that the painting is the horde of lines"
That's a statement not question. lol ^.^
LINE VARIATION
I also add more variations of the line. it'll help you to understand how the line works, and you'll realize that every line you made has a name.
This is a very fundamental part, cause you can draw anything after this.
there are more about the line variation, you can also add your line variation on your line drawing/painting.
SKETCH
To make you easy understand my tutorial, I always start the tutorial with the sketch. Well, I draw the cool hipster man in the portrait mode. I used Rough Pencils for this. This is the first layer to help you ink easily.

STYLES
1) MAPPING 01
Mapping 01 is about how you made the only clean line.
I feel the India Ink when used Mapping brush for making a clean line. I think it's very important to brush in Clip Studio Paint.
2) MAPPING 02
If you want to get more shadow on your line work, try to used cross-hatching technique. control the thin - thick line to get the volume on your object. cross-hatching sometime can be really helpful ways of creating a unique style.
3) MAPPING 03
Is anybody love comic? Well, Mapping pen also can help you to improve your comic style. I am personally recommended this brush to make comic (for beginners). as you can see, the result is so solid, you can add cross-hatching too to get a more fulled line. Well, In this tutorial, I am not much talking about comic inking, we can talk about this next tutorial if you want. there are so many styles you can improve with an only a single brush called Mapping pen. Just keep exploring.
4) MAPPING & TONE SCRAPING
Mapping and Tone Scraping is a combination 2 brush together.
Anybody love Stippling work? I think you can use Tone Scraping brush for that. As you can see, stippling brush stroke creates volume on the painting.
5) MAPPING & DROPLET
This effect also the result combination of Mapping brush and droplet. some traditional artist loves the expressive stroke. they love to play with the drop ink on their paper.
This is a good way to get cool ink drop on your artwork.
6) MAPPING & LIGHTER INK
Lighter Ink gives you the solid wet inking result. It looks like under the mapping line. the realistic lover can use this brush to make their imagination coming true of course with the ink feel. Try this if you love realistic and line art together.
7) MAPPING, LIGHTER INK & WET PAPER01
Use this combination to get a more artistic result. As you can see, the result gives a strong and smooth character of the object so you get the balance result. It's also perfect for the original India Ink media lover.
8) BIT HUSKY
If you zoom in the line, you get a really strong stroke of the brush. that gives you a solid and artistic line. Bit Husky gives you strokes of the real traditional brush, and it's also dry.
9) SMOOTH
Look same with the Bit Husky stroke, but not. The Smooth India Ink brush can give you a sharper line. you can make even make gradation with the thin and thick line with only one brush. Try this if you love to play with only one brush but want to get a various result.
10) ROUGH
Rough and Bit Husky have almost the same line characteristic. the difference between them is about the stroke. Rough come with the smoother line than Bit Husky. Rough brush perfect for your solid line but want to get more stroke.
11) LIGHTER INK
Lighter Ink comes with pressure sensitivity. Every pressure gives a different result. This brush great for realistic India Ink result. You can paint realistic India Ink with this brush. you can also decide the volume on your painting.
12) HALF DRY AQUARELLE
Half Dry Aquarelle is my original brush creation. you can found this brush after you download and install it.
This is a very special brush, you can feel the brush perfect for your half-dry India Ink effect. This brush also gives you a more artistic result by the way. it also plays pressure sensitivity. the stroke is so rich, so you can get so many styles only with a brush.
13) INK PRESSURE01
Ink Pressure01 is also my brush creation. It really needs your pressure sensitivity skill to play with. You can get solid both so smooth wet paper texture. You can play volume on your object also get artistic brush stroke.
14) WET PAPER01
actually, I made this brush for playing on wet paper. That's why it's not really good for line, but it'll perfect for feeling the real wet paper effect.
15) MAPPING & ROUGH
Mapping is perfect for the line and Rough perfect for the solid stroke. the combination of both these brushes gives the expressive result. looks so dry and so strong right?
16) MAPPING & HALF DRY AQUARELLE
Some people love to leave the half-dry effect under their solid thin line. this is the perfect way for you. combine both of the brushes and you get the unique result. By the way, I love this so much. ^.^
17) MAPPING & INK PRESSURE01
If you love the unique style of India Ink, you can try this one. It gives you a thin line also volume gradation.
18) MAPPING, DROPLET & HALF DRY AQUARELLE
Your artistic sense becomes higher when you use this way. that's not tidy but so expressive. Well, sometimes expressive style gives you the never-ending unbored result. Trust me. ^.^
19) MAPPING, TONE SCRAPING & LIGHTER INK
The combination of mapping, stippling, and wet India Ink give you a very unique style. you get the stippling texture, also you get the object volume with the Lighter Ink brush. last, you get the mapping to cover up everything.
20) ROUGH & HALF DRY AQUARELLE
The rough brush gives a solid effect, and the half-dry give the artistic wet result. you can use this way to get unique style
Well, That's the 20 ways to paint with line only. You actually can use only one brush to get a thousand styles/effect. but I mention some of the other brush to get the richer result. So keep exploring to get the best style for your own India Ink artwork. you can even combine 10 India Ink brush for one painting. that's up to you. I hope this tutorial can help you much.
