If you are more sensitive to light and shade than color, it is highly recommended to start with grayscale, and the coloring method is not too complicated.

The following teaching will use my experience to use [tone compensation layer] to color.

Prepare a grayscale manuscript

This picture is mainly divided into characters and backgrounds, and the characters are divided into various parts, ex: hair, coat, shoes, clothes, skin, etc.

I always use the polyline selection to select roughly, and then use the selection pen and the selection eraser to refine it.

The division is complete!

Color and process with tone compensation layer

Then use [Tone Compensation Layer]>[Color Balance] to give the ideal color to the part of it. Use [Next Layer Crop] to make the tone compensation layer fit the range of the divided object layer below, and repeat the same steps for other divided objects.

Basically, the color is complete (if the background is not monochrome, it must be processed separately).

Finally, use [Color Compensation Layer]>[Gradation Correspondence] to create an overall atmosphere to create an overall atmosphere.

Several combinations are created by changing, increasing and decreasing the colors in the gradient. If you want a finer adjustment, you can check the [Blend Rate Curve] at the bottom right to achieve the effect by adding and moving the anchor point.

Interesting color compensation layer combination

I want to make this color manuscript more varied, so I overlaid another layer of [Hue Compensation Layer]>[Hue Inversion], and used the original mask of this layer to make a simple and strong effect. Use an eraser to wipe the part, so that the exposed image contrasts sharply with the inverted tone.

The hue adjusted by [Hue Compensation Layer]>[Color Balance] and [Binarization] combine to create a subtle atmosphere with a sense of nostalgia.

Lower the layer transparency of [Binarization] to achieve the following effects.

[Tone Compensation Layer]>[Tone Curve] can give illustrations unexpected strange colors.

Adjust the color, and then use the mask to erase unnecessary parts.

It feels that the whole has become colorful.

This is my experience from trying [tone compensation layer], I hope it will be helpful to you (●´ω`●)ゞ
