Names and functions of manga manuscript paper guidelines

①Trim marks

→Cutting will occur at the red line

②Bleed width (bleed/gutter)

→Margins to accommodate misalignment when cutting

If you are creating a work to be submitted to a magazine editorial department, you can use the magazine template by opening the manuscript paper setting template from [Purpose of work] → [Show all comic settings].

It is said that the registration marks are the binding size, but the cutting position (registration marks) may change when binding a book, depending on the size of the book, such as an actual manga magazine or a book.

Setting the crop marks in the new dialog of Crysta

Check the manuscript settings items in the New Creation dialog and specify the necessary size and settings.

① Finished size → Crop mark position

② Bleed width → Bleed/Dust

③ Resolution of monochrome manuscript is 600dpi

(If there is an instruction for resolution, follow it)

④ It is convenient to use monochrome or gray as the basic expression color

The marks on the outside of the binding frame are called registration marks, and the binding (finished size) indicates the position where the pages will be cut when a magazine or book is printed. Initially if the author does not specify this position, the book cannot be made.

(When you actually print a book, you print it on a larger sheet of paper and then cut it to fit each page.)

There are two basic expression colors: color, gray, and monochrome. Of these, black-and-white manga manuscripts must be delivered in black or white with no intermediate colors.

[POINT] The basic expression color and other settings can be changed even after creating the manuscript by going to the menu [Edit] → [Basic Page Settings] or the menu [Page Management] → [Basic Work Settings]

Names of each page

These are the names of each page. Please check the position of the top, bottom, gutter and fore-edge.

You can get by without knowing the names of each page, but it's useful to know them.

The unique circumstances surrounding manga magazines in Japan

What is Safeline?

Magazines and books differ not only in size but also in aspect ratio, so they may be cut at a position other than the registration marks on the manuscript paper.

For manuscript presets with safety margins (green guidelines), the margins indicate the safe area that will not be trimmed when cutting for magazines or paperbacks.

In other words, depending on the format of the magazine/book, any drawing outside the safe line may not fit on the page.

When submitting or delivering work to a publisher, select the corresponding editorial department's preset and keep important depictions within the safety line.

If you know in advance which publishing company (editorial department) you will be submitting or delivering to, choose the preset for that editorial department and keep important depictions within the safe line.

It's pretty sad when the main character's face, which has a good expression, is cut in half by the cutting during printing. It will come up in your dreams later.

Binding position of magazine pages

Check the binding of the magazine/book you want to publish.

Most magazines in Japan use the setting of [right binding][left page] starting (there are exceptions, so be sure to check). When creating a new work, set it to [multiple pages].

After creating the manuscript, thumbnails of each page will be displayed in the page management window.

If the binding position and start page (left or right) are incorrect, you can change them from the menu: Page management → Change basic work settings.

resolution

About resolution

Resolution (dpi) is an index that indicates how many dots can be displayed within a length of 1 inch. Resolution settings are essential for manuscripts that will be printed, such as magazines and fanzines.

Resolution has no practical meaning unless it is combined with the print size (mm, etc.). Just as you can use the "speed" to calculate how many kilometers a car travels in one hour, the "resolution" setting determines how many pixels are required to print a line that is 180 mm long.

[POINT] Resolution is an index required for printing. If you set the resolution incorrectly, there is no recovery. In the worst case scenario, you will have to redraw everything, which will drastically reduce the quality of the print. Check the settings carefully.

Common Resolution Settings

The commonly used resolution settings are:

[Monochrome] -> 600dpi

[Color/Gray] -> 350dpi/300dpi

Of course, this can change depending on the conditions.

For manga manuscripts, be sure to check with the editorial department or fanzine printing company first.
