Night Sky and Horoscope motifs
The night sky always gives a different glow to an illustration. In this tip lets try to learn how we can make a starry background in Clip studio Paint.
Though I’ll be using Clip studio paint pro ver.2.0 still the methods would be similar for many different types of software.
Intro
I’ll be making the tip in different sections and steps. Starting with making a night sky, then adding stars, galaxy then further on I will be adding horoscopes motif as well.
let’s start with making the night sky and a basic illustration
Making Constellations/ Starry background
Making Night Sky
Firstly make any type of illustration or foreground you want.
In my case I have made this illustration of a boy standing on a rooftop.
Quickly add colors to your foreground however you want.
NOTE: Remember to make your work in different layers as once the background i.e. night/starry sky. You may want to add more details or object in between foreground and background. Like I will be adding, electrical poles, few building and trees later on.
So I have quickly added colors to the foreground, once that’s done we will move on to making the background, that is the constellation or a starry night sky.
This is a basic about layer properties that should be kept in mind. Whenever making a background remember to keep its layer or the folder containing the layers at the bottom while the foreground folders should sit at the top.
Once this is done let’s move on to making the night sky.
Make selections of the part where you want to add the background by selecting the auto select, default short cut for it (W)
after making the selection add a darker blue color using a pen.
If you are looking to make a lighter shade sky then you can use a lighter color as well.
Once you have added the basic color for the sky start adding different colors that can often be seen in the night sky. Like purple, different shades of blue, light brown etc.
>Add the colors with the use of brushes and I have also used Soft Airbrush.
>Add colors like this at different places.
NOTE: Try to keep the bottom of the sky blue.
Keep adding colors like this.
You would notice how I have l kept the bottom part little bright. That’s because it will be represent the city lights.
And Don’t panic if its looking a mess right now.
Start blending the colors, You can use the default blenders already in ClipStudio Paint.
To blend it like this I have used
>Wet Bleed Blender
>Blend
After blending you would already start to see the night sky roughly.
Once that done you can use Airbrushes to give it more sky look,
Just gently spray to look like clouds
Notice how I have used Airbrush to give a little purple effect to the sky.
Remember that the majority of the sky ‘should’ be blue.
Using Airbrush you can give darker effects like this at many places.
Using the same trick give a lighter shade too at someplaces
To give a bright glow look at some places.
Add a layer>Change blending mode>add(glow)
You can change the mode to something else as well experiment on your own to see which one suits the best for you
Then again with the use of airbrush give such effect at few spots
you can use some neon green and pink colors to add the effects of nebula or northern lights.
With thick paint (round mixing brush) you can add darker colors at some places then again give it a blend.
After this we will add stars.
Adding stars
Once the night sky is done, adding stars is even more fun.
Go to airbrush and select SPRAY.
You can use my setting as shown or can also experiment on your own.
Use the spray to make stars that are further away.
>keep switching colors from white to ‘off white’ or cream color. As the stars often appears of that color.
>Keep changing the particle size too, add variations to your stars.
Just after some sprays it will already give the starry look.
Add twinkling effect by using ‘SPARKLE’ brush.
You can also use G-pen or some other pen to make some bigger stars.
add some buildings, forest, or mountains. Whatever you’d like to add in your illustration.
>If making a city, I’d recommend adding a light blue and and yellow combination in back representing the city lights.
>If making mountains you can skip yellow, And can also go with a darker color.
- I have used Cloud brush and spray to make the bottom part of the sky.
Now add details to your foreground.
You can add clouds, different colors for nebula or northern lights as you’d like.
That’s it for the starry sky ^^ <3…
Horoscope (Taurus)
For making horoscope one needs to know the location and positions of the stars.
You can easily draw the stars with a pen and add twinkling effect with an airbrush
Galaxy
This is an optional tip
Using Airbrush you can add a curvy line like this to represent a galaxy.
Use the default cloud button, to give cloudy effects around a galaxy.
Keep reference images with you all the time to give it a more realistic look.
Use different shades of orange, brown, and use it around the center part.
once it resembles a shape like this, blend at few spots where the darker clouds meet the orange clouds
Further on in the middle, using cloud brush add white clouds like this.
It will already start to look like a galaxy.
This is how it will look with the starry background
Using the opacity slider you can adjust it as per your preference in the background.
Check out my video tutorial too.
Here you can see the full process along with how I have used the brushes.
That’s it for making a starry sky
Hope this was helpful for you.

Keep practicing everyone ^^ :) <3
