Making wings are so easy if you draw, decent details guides and have right references.

 

To start off, firstly draw a rough of what you want to make in my case. I made three style for the wings.

1. Side view

2. Flapped

3. Flying

Down below is an old art of mine of which wings I wanted to upgrade.

You may notice how I have made arrows for each.

These arrows are a vital step to make any wing.

 

Most wings are usually either narrow at start or end and they are either broader at start or end too.

Though mostly its that they are narrower at start.

 

Some wings like of a butterfly are different though. Like this happy one :)

Side view

Side view.

When making a side view wing, people often make only one wing. Though to make it more appealing some part of the behind wings should be made as well.

TIP: If making a highly detailed drawing made inner side a of wing that is in foreground.

The one in back would be the outer side

 

For front, back or side view usually the shape can be made similar. Except you'd have to draw inner side for front and outer side for back.

Add details to your wings keeping these in my mind. For this work of mine since it was not meant for high details, I didn't draw the inner side here.

Make your wings by such simple curvy designs and lines representing feathers.

Remember that feathers are often overlapping.

 

Flapped Wings

When a bird takes off, It flaps the wings like this.

 

NOTE: Wings are often a mirror view of the other wing.

 

 

The design and making for feathers remains the same as it was for the side view wings.

 

Thought the contrast lies in its shape (i.e. it is flapped) and how the inner side of wings was shown a little

See how even here both the wings are mirrored image of each other.

 

The arrows will help you a lot to keep the shape of both wings same and also to maintain their similarities.

 

The feathers for inside are often long and straight, Make few lines on it like show for a little details.

Flying

Well wings are meant to fly, so how can we forget to draw this.

 

Make a rough of how you want it to fly. Then to make wings simply draw the lines and arrows to determine their size and design.

 

When one is flying high above their wings are spread widely, so when drawing it keep this part in mind.

 

Try to keep an mirror image.

 

The ways to make feathers would remain same as that of side view and of the flapped one.
