Hello! In this tutorial I will show you how to draw three cool steampunk things. Namely: gear, clock, binoculars. Brown vintage colors, metal, gears and detailed mechanisms - this is what gives things a steampunk flavor.

Watch the whole painting process here:

1. Gear

Let's start with the basis of any steampunk illustration - gears. These are small or huge parts that rotate and give life to mechanisms. Whatever the gears were, it is necessary to show their volume, symmetry and grace.

Create new project by clicking File -> New, customize some properties and click OK. Then find Symmetrical ruler and increase the Number of lines to 10.

Click on the canvas and a ruler will appear. Draw a top view sketch of your gear.

Now you can turn off the ruler:

Select gear with selection tool and find Free Transform.

Transform the gear to make it look in perspective. What is it for? For more volume and dynamism.

But the volume, of course, will not appear by itself, you need to draw it:

Now I drew the main difference in brightness in monochrome under the sketch. For each individual detail, I made a separate layer, and then simply merged them.

Now let's add colors. For illustrations in the style of steampunk, it is convenient to do it with the new Clip Studio Paint Ver. 3.0 feature, just click Filter -> Effect -> Retro film and play with it.

Okay, let’s draw light and shadows! But first let me tell you this great tip: don’t delete monochrome gear without shadows. And whenever you need to draw a shadow or light in one part of the gear without affecting the other, use the Auto select Sub Tool and select the part you want.

Create new layers in the Add (Glow) mode and paint masterpieces of light metal!

For shadows geat to use Multiple layer mode.

Think of a better way to show that it is metal. On the protruding edges, draw a light that will indicate the wear and age of the material.

Draw scratches, stains, damage on the gear. This is the story of the gear, its working days and how often it moves.

2. Clock

And now let's draw a clock. Also an important thing in steampunk illustrations. There are clearly gears inside them, by the way. The sophisticated clock has a beautiful dial and elegant hands.

As before, click File -> New, customize project and click OK.

Choose Symmetrical ruler and make sure that Number of lines = 12. This is the number of digits on the clock face.

Click on the canvas and a ruler will appear. Draw a top view sketch of your clock.

Click Text Tool and write all the numbers.

Tap pencil button and then you can change the font.

Finally, after eleven copy-pasts, we got:

Copy current layer and erase all (this is for using symmetrical ruler again), then draw perfect shapes.

Turn off the ruler, transform layer for cool perspective look.

Draw other important details. Background, clock face rim.

Duplicate the clock face rim layer and move it up a bit.

Tap layer below and make it darker with Tonal Correction:

Draw other parts of the clock, remember that it is faster to put each detail on a new layer.

Create new layers in Multiple and Add (Glow) modes and try make it more magically.

Remember the shadows that still need to be drawn:

Select the light numbers and fill a new layer in Add (Glow) mode, then apply the Gaussian Blur for this magic look:

For an old vintage weathered look, add scratches:

3. Binoculars

Binoculars are not just two cylinders connected to each other. This is a mysterious thing that can amaze with its glasses and mechanisms. Allows us to see something new. That's right, the unexplored world of steampunk.

Create new project by clicking File -> New, customize and OK.

Draw a sketch:

Monochrome version of all parts of the binoculars:

Add color with brown color and Overlay layer:

Try another layer mode, for example, Color, and change the lens color.

Start working with light and lens cracks:

Use Multiple for shadow, Add (Glow) and Color dodge for light. Also draw the light inside the cracks.

Draw shadows with a layer in Multiply mode on the metal of the binoculars.

Also light (Add (Glow) mode):

A little texture:

Work with another metal material:

Add some cool effects like changing color of another metal materials, make it more saturated with overlay. Also scratches and details.

Perfectly! We drew three things in the style of steampunk. I wish you inspiration for your own masterpieces and good luck.
