This article is based on the tablet version of Clip Studio Paint.

The layout of menu commands may vary in the smartphone version.

While working with 3D may feel a bit challenging, the advantage of using Clip Studio Paint's 3D function is that it makes it easy to incorporate complex shapes that are difficult or time-consuming to draw into your work.

3D materials can be used by either importing and using materials stored in Material palette > 3D, materials that are publicly available on Assets, or generic 3D files.

Note:

The 3D files that can be imported vary depending on your device. For more details, please refer to the Clip Studio Paint System Requirements: (https://www.clipstudio.net/en/dl/system/).

3D object materials such as small objects and backgrounds cannot be used in Simple Mode. Please switch to Studio Mode to use them.

How to use 3D materials

For more details on the basics of how to import, use, and move 3D materials on your canvas, please check this article.

Create small objects and backgrounds using 3D primitives

3D primitives are basic geometric 3D materials.

Since you can adjust the aspect ratio of each shape and the number of divisions of its faces and sides, you can combine multiple shapes to create complex shapes like blocks.

The image below shows a room set recreated using 3D primitives. By creating a set in 3D, you can explore its composition from various angles.

For more information on how to use 3D primitives, please check this article.

Use panorama to show a 360° background

Panorama is a feature that allows you to add a 360° background image to a 3D layer in Clip Studio Paint. It is stored in the Material palette > 3D > Panorama .

You can also use it as a background for both 3D and 2D illustrations.

Images that you can set include photos taken with a camera capable of taking 360° images, and equirectangular projection images like the one below that can be exported using 3D software.

For more information on how to use the Panorama settings and it’s features, please check this article.

Convert 3D models into lines (Convert 3D to lines and tones) [EX]

You can also use the outline of a 3D model as line art for manga and illustrations. You can create accurate line art without having to draw the lines by hand.

After placing the 3D model at the desired angle, select Layer > Convert to lines and tones to create separate layers for lines, base, and shadows.

*The shadow layer will change depending on the settings.

Note:

Convert to lines and tones can also be used on 2D images such as photographs and illustrations.

For more information on how to Convert to lines and tones, please check this article.
