Decide on the idea

I decided to make a quick skull which will be a tillable pattern. I will be able to use it on clothing or walls or any other texture that I want. I think making a pattern is very different and interesting. Just keep in mind the purpose of the pattern and try to fulfill that goal :)

Once you have the idea you can hunt around pinterest and other social medias where you can just look for references. What other people have done. What do you think you can do and how. Creating a moldboard helps in terms of drawing and inspiration.

You can check out the video, but if you want a very quick rundown you should read the article :) It is way faster and more compact. My video includes the painting and my commentary.

This is how my final drawing turned out. After that You can start creating the pattern

Creating the pattern

Easiest way is to make a square pattern. For that you will need to use the ruler tool. In the tool you need to choose Figure Ruler. In the settings you need to choose a square. While holding shift you can create a guide for your pattern. Make sure to display it on all layers and make sure you snapping works!

After creating the guide. Just place your drawing on one of the edges of the ruler. After that you can select the excess and drag it to the other side. Make sure to hold Shift while doing it! Make sure it aligns very well.

After that you need to turn off your ruler! If it is on, the pattern will not be made.

Go to Edit - > Register Material - > Image

Check Tiling and choose a folder where to save.

You have your pattern :)
