๐Ÿ‘‹ Hello guys, it's Grace again; welcome to my '๐ก๐š๐ข๐ซ ๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐ช๐ฎ๐ž'. For the record, I love painting hair... It's totally a whole of effort and patience to begin with! But not all of you confidence or even like to do it, right?

Unfortunately, if you're painting portraits, furry animals or small marsupials, hair is almost always a requirement! ๐Ÿ˜…

Anyway, here's an introduction to the different styles I've used to paint hair. There will be several techniques, I'm still learning and getting better as I've only really painted hair since the beginning of my digital art journey back in May 2019 with my boyfriend In the old days it was watercolor or pencil.

ย

There is no โ€˜rightโ€™ or โ€˜wrongโ€™ way to go about it. Have a look at other artists techniques and adopt one or adapt to suit yourself, it all comes with practice. There are some great tutorials on Clip Studio TIPS for painting hair that admittedly, I must have a closer look at before submitting mine.

ย

I mostly use a single brush in Clip Studio Paint as a starting point, just the ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ ๐›๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ก, but vary the size and pressure using my graphic tablet. And ๐ฆ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฉ๐ž๐ง for details or hair strings. I ๐๐จ๐ง'๐ญ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐ข๐š ๐ข๐ง๐ค brushes, they seem to be too uniform and too wild to handle, but maybe I just need practice. More in-depth tutorials will follow.

โ“ต : Preparation

โฏ‡ I. - My initial step to create this tutorial will always be the same as you (probably) with giving the ๐…๐ข๐ฅ๐ž ๐ง๐š๐ฆ๐ž first. But you can always name or rename your artwork later if you wish.

ย

โฏ‡ II. - I wish to print my artwork as big as A4 paper, so my actual Canvas settings will be the same as above: with ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ Resolution.

ย

โฏ‡ III. - It depends on your actual habit, I'll start my tutorial with grey color on ๐๐š๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ color. I learned that using grey-scale of paper will help my eyes stay longer when drawing digitally. White background sometimes too bright especially if you plan to draw in front of the computer consistently in the night time.

After that, with ๐Œ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐ž๐ง, I draw my sketch with a new raster layer.

ย

๐Ÿ… ๐๐Ž๐๐”๐’:

You can have the entire outline of mine (high-resolution image) as PNG to download below (๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐œ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐ค ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐š๐ฏ๐ž ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐ž ๐š๐ฌ...) then you can use it to do your own experiment!

ย

Feel free to use my outline as you wish. Just please give a credit to me if you don't mind by link back to this tutorial. Thank you! ๐ŸคŸ

โ“ถ : Hair Treatment

Paint the basic shape of the hair using Turnip Pen. After that, I add some basic colors (๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘ข๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘‘๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘˜๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘’๐‘ ) with simple ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ brush selection as follow:

โ–ฒ Using only standard/default ๐ƒ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ from ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ brush set, I give the first initial brush strokes for several areas. By doing so, I limit myself to make something in detail, this is my habitual color blocking phase II.

ย

ย

โ“ท : Color Treatment

โ–ฒ I use another colors to block and give some highlights; again in my term; it's my habitual color blocking phase III. My suggestion to keep on using larger brushes so you don't get caught in detailing mode when you build up color variation into it.

ย

Please take a look carefully, the way that I give a few of big strokes always ๐š๐œ๐œ๐จ๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ก๐š๐ข๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ but with ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ณ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ direction, ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌ yet.

ย

โ–ฒ Now this is some exciting phase, with only ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ก from default ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ brush set: I start to blend those colors applied to the hair. Sometimes I'm using shortcut key ๐€๐‹๐“ (๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฉ๐ข๐œ๐ค) to pick nearby colors; adding some contrast to the overall hair.

โ–ฒ ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ก from default ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ brush set is fine, I'm comfortable enough with the result, but sometimes if you can try other brushes within the watercolor set to achieve different results.

ย

You can try ๐๐š๐ข๐ง๐ญ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ฒ instead, but you need to press more while brushing to get the 'paint' somewhat bolder for its density.

ย

ย

โ“ธ : Highlights Treatment

Another fun part; ๐š๐๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌ! I saw a lot of hair tutorials; there are plenty on the internet already especially talking about shiny hair techniques.

ย

Well, honestly ๐ผ ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘›'๐‘ก ๐‘’๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘› ๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ ๐‘š๐‘–๐‘›๐‘’'๐‘  ๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘“๐‘“๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก ๐‘“๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š ๐‘œ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ ... But let me just fill you with ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ˆ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐›๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฐ๐š๐ฒ to share according to my research.

โ–ฒ With ๐Œ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐ž๐ง, I create some strands of hair with highlights randomly (๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ ๐‘–๐‘ก ๐‘š๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก ๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘’๐‘š๐‘  ๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ก ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘œ๐‘š ๐‘๐‘ข๐‘ก ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก๐‘ข๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘–๐‘ก โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘  ๐‘Ž ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘› ๐‘“๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘™๐‘œ๐‘ค๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘Ÿ ๐‘“๐‘™๐‘œ๐‘ค) and sometimes with additional ๐‘๐ž๐š๐ฅ ๐๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ข๐ฅ to add some textures.

โ“น : Smoothing Treatment

Now, this one is an ๐š๐›๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ง to do; a ๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐ก๐š๐ข๐ซ ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐จ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ! Hahaha!! Well, sorry for the over-exciting reaction; but as you can see below, this is where the real trick begins! And I learn that from my lovely Futopia's tutorial about VFX Techniques!

I proudly present; one and only way to make hair shading, mixing, smoothing... EVERYTHING EASIER! ๐Ÿ˜†

โ–ฒ Touch-ups, using BIG strokes of ๐€๐ข๐ซ ๐›๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ก โžก ๐’๐จ๐Ÿ๐ญ and slightly add black/darker tone; paint the whole piece altogether to my desire.

โ–ฒ Now for the second touch-ups, drawing some hair strands using ๐“๐ž๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐๐ž๐ง will be optional. Why? Because ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐๐จ๐ง'๐ญ ๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฉ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ญ ๐ข๐ญ ๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐›๐ฒ ๐จ๐ง๐ž, this is just my hobby/dedication to make it looks realistic enough for my eyes.

๐Ÿ›‘ Don't just leave it be like that; you need to ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ข๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐›๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž ๐š ๐ฐ๐ž๐ญ ๐ก๐š๐ข๐ซ. The more contrast of its colors will have a different representation.

ย

Try to make it looks natural by doing a smudge or blend with

Try to use variation of colors to create an interesting ๐‘ โ„Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ฆ ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘“๐‘™๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› with light blue or even light green. Always remember to blend it over or smudge it afterwards; obviously speaking, just play along with several brushes until you feel satisfy with it.

๐ŸคŸ Now it's ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ with the mother's hairstyle. Can you copy and modify any of my techniques and apply it to yours?
