First thing and in case you don't know:
What is WEBTOON?
Webtoon is a vertically narrated comic, which makes it easy to read for smartphones. As shown in the following image of my WEBTOON called: PENALTY.
This type of format was created especially for the current times where the vast majority of people consume content on a mobile phone and the world of manga is no exception.
Therefore, in this article I will teach you how to Create your WEBTOON in Clip Studio PAINT in the following video:
VIDEO: Create your own WEBTOON in Clip Studio PAINT
The video is in Spanish but has subtitles in many languages, you will surely find yours.
What do you think about the video? I wanted to make it as brief as possible to share with you all my TIPS.
Essentials for creating a WEBTOON in Clip Studio PAINT
Now we are going to review the most important thing we learned in the video.
1. Create an account on Webtoon
You go to the official Webtoon page depending on your language and go to the Publish button:
Where it will take you to a new window so that you can register in a very simple way, with your email and a password.
Then it will take you to the creation of your work where you must add the thumbnails that best represent your Manga, you must also add to which Genre your work corresponds, the Title of the series and a Summary of the story.
After completing everything you click on the button: Save series, and that's it! You have created your series! But now you need to create your first episode, for this we are going to create it in Clip Studio PAINT that makes it easy for us to create our WEBTOONS.
2. Create your own WEBTOON in Clip Studio PAINT
Now it's time for Clip Studio PAINT, we go to File - New. In Type of Work we choose the second option that corresponds to WEBTOON.
In File Name we put a name and in Save in: we choose the folder where we want to save our file.
In Canvas, we put the following values: Width 3200 and Height 30720.
Resolution: It can be 300, 350 or 600.
In Color of basic expression we select: Color (Although your Manga is in Black and White, as is my case)
And in Canvas/page settings we activate: Number of pages in 8. (Or the number of pages your episode needs)
And we click: Accept.
(If you want you can save this image)
And we have the following, our Webtoon episode ready to start creating it.
To enter each of the pages we double click on each one of them and see the following, a white canvas with the paper layer and a raster layer by default.
Next I recommend you change the name of the raster layer to: Sketch and create Guides (the guides must be created every 5120 pixels) that divide the canvas, thus we will avoid our bullets suffering cuts, that is very important when our readers do not have good signal on their smartphones.
And from now on we can start drawing our Webtoon, first we start with the Storyboard and then with the sketch, where we can see more details. In addition to being able to add the Bullets with the option: Bullet Border.
And the 8 canvases would look as follows:
And in color like this:
3. Preview of your WEBTOON with your Smartphone
Clip Studio PAINT has a very useful tool that allows us to preview our WEBTOON with a Smartphone, for this you must have the Clip Studio PAINT app installed on your Smartphone. (With the free version, 1 hour a day is enough)
And at the top you will find an option called: Connect to smartphone.
The following window will appear with a QR code.
That you should scan with the camera of your Smartphone.
And we can see a Preview of our WEBTOON on a Smartphone.
4. Exporta tu WEBTOON en Clip Studio PAINT
The time has come to export our WEBTOON! To do this we go to: File - Export Webtoon...
And in the next window we must add the following:
File Format: PNG
Name: Name of the chapter or whatever you want.
Output Size: Scale at 25%
Page Range: All
Export Settings: Split Vertically at 1280
This is how each image of our WEBTOON will be:
Width: 800 pixels and Height: 1280 pixels. The size that WEBTOON asks us for.
Making the images have been cut in the best way.
5. Upload your episode to WEBTOON
Earlier we had created our account and our series, now it's time to add our episode. For this we must write a title for the episode and at the bottom with the button: Choose a file to upload, we are going to load all our images that we exported before.
We are ready with the episode! But we need to add a cover image for our episode, which we're going to create next:
6. Previous image of the episode on WEBTOON
We go to Clip Studio PAINT and create a new project in: File - New.
In Type of Work we choose the first option, we put a name in: File name.
And the important thing comes on Canvas (if you want you can save this image too)
We put in Width: 1333 pixels and in Height: 1258
In resolution it can be in 300, 350 or 600 dpi.
And we click: Accept.
And we just copy a panel from our episode and paste it into this new file.
Then we are going to export our episode cover, for this we are going to: File - Export (one layer) - .png (PNG)...
And in the window: PNG export settings in the Color - Expression color section, we activate RGB Color.
And in Output Size, Scale at 12%. That gives us the exact measurement of the image size that WEBTOON asks us for episode previews: 160px wide by 151px tall.
If you want you can save this image too :)
After exporting the image, we load it in: Previous image.
And ready! We can post our episode! Or you can also save it as a draft and post it later. You can even schedule the day you want to publish it.
7. Final Tips
I recommend that if you are going to create a Manga, regardless of whether you publish it on WEBTOON, I always recommend that our original work be in the normal format. (Book). And then adapt the bullets to the vertical format of Webtoon and thus play with the narration of our story.
In this way we can make our work known to many more people, whether it is the public that prefers to read from their Smartphone or the people who still prefer to read Manga as books.
