Presentation

In this tutorial, I will show you step by step how to color a cake drawn in anime style. Cakes in anime usually look very appetizing, coloring them can be a fun and creative experience. Follow these steps to achieve an excellent result:

Mainly we need a plate

It is created from the shape tool and filled with the fill tool.

1. Cake Sketch:

subtopic: featured angles

These are the three most common angles used to represent a cake: the close-up from above offers a panoramic view that encompasses the entire composition (2D), the dynamic plane inclined at 45 degrees adds depth and energy to the image (3D), and In the lateral plane it gives us a unique perspective that highlights the texture and details of the cake (2D and 3D, depending on how it is drawn).

Below are other examples.

Start by drawing the basic outline of the cake on your canvas “using a Maru brush at a size of 1.5”. You can opt for a whole cake or a cut portion, depending on your preference.

2. Base Coloring:

the canvas hierarchy should follow this order

Start by coloring the base of the cake with the color of your choice (with the filling tool) (don't forget that; at most we will use 6 colors of your choice in the drawing), in this case we will use a light brown color.

Then color the cream that covers the surface of the cake dough. (in this case an almost white color)

Now, it's time to add depth and dimension with a layer of shadows,

(In the video, it was applied at the end of the process (because I forgot)).

We add an additional detail, such as a blueberry or fruit (although its appearance is more similar to a grape in this case).

We applied the color to the cake filling (violet) and opted for a light tone to highlight the contrast in the blueberry. Additionally, I added two leaves because I thought they added a touch of extra charm.

We paint the leaves to finalize our base colors

Shadows, light and volume

the canvas hierarchy should follow this order (in general it may vary)

Step 2

To begin, we will select our base color (point 1), in this case, violet, with a right click. Then, we will direct the cursor to the color box and double left click (point 2). This will open the color adjustment window. In this window, we will lower the hue bar slightly (point 3) and observe the difference in the preview (point 4).

Step 3

We will use the color obtained and apply at our discretion. This will add the play of light that is often mentioned but sometimes difficult to understand. (in this case only in the color violet)

Then, we will repeat this process two more times.

the next image is shadow 3

lights

Now, we are going to use the same technique to add lights. However, this time, in the color adjustment window, we will raise the hue bar slightly to get a lighter tone.

volume

Next, we will use the saji brush, with which we will draw lines (at discretion) with the color white to add volume. This detail, along with the shadows of the objects, usually provides a fresh touch to the whole.

texture from the table

To achieve a cake texture in the cake dough, we have options such as pencil (in its various variants), pastel or airbrush. (the technique is the same as with shadows to obtain the color, slightly lower the hue bar for contrast)

example

You can improve the image even further by lowering the opacity to 50% on the line-art layer.

improve the image

In this section, we are going to enhance the image to make it even more attractive through a simple blurring process. Here is the procedure:

1_With the finished image, we will hide the colors and flatten the image.

2_We will duplicate the resulting layer.

3_In the second layer, we will go to the Filter menu and apply a blur, selecting "Blur more".

4_Next, we will reduce the opacity of this layer to around 56%.

5_We will duplicate the layer again.

6_To finish, we will change the combination mode of this last layer, selecting "Linear Burn" (or any other you prefer).

Once this process is complete, all that remains is to flatten the image and export it as a PNG file.
