Unique sneaker design
Hello! I'm Metosoi!
This time I'll be explaining sneaker design!
Casual, sporty, retro, street, high-tech... sneakers show various expressions depending on the era and purpose. By understanding the structure and how to draw sneakers, you will be able to bring more originality to your characters!
Sneaker Construction
Sneakers have many parts.
Knowing the names of the parts can give you inspiration from existing sneakers.
By combining each part, you can express the era, purpose, and design of the sneakers!
1.Shoelace
A lace used to securely fasten a shoe to the foot. By adjusting the tightness, it can be adjusted to optimize the fit and provide stability and comfort while walking. It is made of synthetic materials, cotton, leather, linen, etc.
2.Aglet
A small cover on each end of the shoelace. It is generally made of plastic or metal.
3.Lace jewel
An accessory attached to the shoelace as decoration. It comes in various designs and shapes. It gives the shoe a unique look.
4.Eyelet
A small hole or metal piece for the shoelace to pass through. It is placed on the upper part of the shoe and protects the material around the hole.
5.Upper
Connects the parts of the shoe. Can be made of a variety of materials.
6.Tongue
Located between the shoelace and the foot, it protects the instep. It also improves the fit of the shoe.
7.Loop Tag
A tag for inserting a logo. It also makes it easier to put on and take off the shoe.
8.Ankle Collar/Ankle Support
Padded or reinforced area around the opening of the shoe. This is especially important for high-top shoes.
9.Heel patch
A reinforcement part at the heel. It is also a space to express the individuality of the brand.
10.Heel counter/side panel
A part that reinforces the back and sides of the shoe. It makes the shoe stronger and increases support for the heel.
11.Heel
The heel part of the shoe. This part is particularly important for cushioning.
12.Outsole
These parts vary greatly depending on the role of the shoe. Generally, rubber that is resistant to friction is used. Some outsoles are sewn on, while others are glued.
13.Midsole
The part between the upper and the outsole. It absorbs shock from the sole of the foot. It is often decorated with logos and embossing.
14.Toe box
Ensures flexibility and comfort. Generally made of leather or suede. It may or may not have ventilation holes. For running shoes, breathable materials such as nylon mesh are used.
15.Forefoot
This is located directly under the bulge from the big toe to the base of the foot. Flexible material is used to support foot movement.
16.Foxing
The rubber at the joint between the upper and the sole.
Sneaker types and styles
There are so many different types of sneakers!
They can create a variety of images depending on the purpose, design, and era!
Low cut
These sneakers expose the ankles. They are light and comfortable to wear.
Examples: casual shoes, skate shoes, running shoes, tennis shoes
Images: light, casual, relaxed, simple, classic, modern, basic
Mid cut
The height is between low-cut and high-cut. It has a moderate presence. It holds the ankle well and is comfortable.
Examples: basketball shoes, skate shoes, outdoor shoes, running shoes
Image: stylish, modern, functional, active
High cut
Sneakers with an opening higher than the ankle. They have a sense of volume and presence. They are shoes designed to protect the ankle.
Examples: basketball shoes, skate shoes, outdoor shoes, work boots, snow boots
Images: protective, tough, bold, heavy, outdoor
Actually designing
We'll introduce some practical arrangements for parts!
Let's try designing!
Replace fabrics
Sneakers are made of a variety of fabrics.
Examples: suede, leather, canvas, etc.
Keeping in mind the ratio of 70% main color, 20% sub color, and 100% accent color will help keep the look cohesive.
Try mixing and matching different fabrics on the toe box and upper.
Don't forget to check how it matches the character's color!
Add parts
You can also add parts such as roller skates or ice spikes depending on the purpose. Reflect your character's roots and hobbies!
