Welcome to Creative Sketching with 3D Models in Clip Studio Paint!

I'm Soul Stinger and I'm drawing since I was a child. I studied fine arts in germany and am working as an independend artists since 2017.

What you will learn in this tutorial:

• the most important 3D functions

• general drawing techniques!

• how to use 3D models with a focus on being creative and independent

• optimal workflow and settings for conceptart and manga/comic creation

This tutorial consists of:

• 17min long youtube tutorial and walkthrough

• step by step description of the most important functions

I advice you to have a look at both because they are complementing each other.

Let's enjoy this together!

[1] Importing a 3D character

Importing a character is easy. Just open the Material Manager, search for the 3D tab, and select body type. If you drag in a body type, you get the standard pose.

If you go to pose and drag in a pose, you'll get the pose right away.

[2] Setting up the Camera - You are the director!

Rotate with left click + drag

Zoom with right click + drag

Move view with middle mouse button + drag

Change camera angle with mouse wheel up-down

The value of the [Perspective] slider decides the angle of the camera lens. A lower value results in an undistorted image, a higher value results in a very wide-angle look and is more distorted.

In this example it is set to 1.00.

A higher value for [Perspective] looks more dynamic. Additionally we can adjust a function called [Manga Perspective] which can further anhance the forshortening of the limbs of a character.

We also have the option to choose from a [Angle Preset]. That saves up a lot of time!

[3] Setting up your layer the right way!

It's very important to set up your 3D layer properly. You don't want to be distracted by the character while drawing.

For this we set the [Layer color] to blue (1). That's the default color and quite usable.

Also we change the layer opacity to something around 30% (2).

[4] Start your Sketch! Some advice.

In my opinion it's easy to get stuck with the 3D model and stick to much to it's outline and form.

This way of tracing is really bad. Because it hinders you to develop your own style and limits your options.

The solution is to use the underlaying model in an indipendent manner.

Sketch the overall shapes of your character on top of the 3D model to transfer it to your own way of thinking. ! important!

[5] Using the [Perspecitve Ruler] of the 3D layer

Ok we have the character but we want to have the space around it filled with something that conveys a story and build a world.

The fastest and easiest way to do this is to enable the [Perspecitve Ruler] of the 3D layer (1) by clicking on it.

Be sure to have [Snap to Special Ruler] enabled (2).

[6] Adding other characters to the scene

To spice up things and get our creative juices flowing we want to bring in some additional characters.

Just drag new poses from the [Material Pose] window (1) and place them in the scene with the transform tools (2).

It's quick and easy.

We just use the preset poses because we want to work quickly to stay in the flow.

[7] Developing the sketch

Just take the freedom to try out different ideas while sketching. You can always go back and forth between 3d layer and sketching layer and adjust the characters poses and proportions to further enhance your story.

[8] Drawing the lineart

If you are satisfied with the sketch you can go to the next step and create either a [Raster Layer] or preferably a [Vector Layer] to draw your lineart.

As you can see I've used some layers to refine the drawing over and over again.

[9] Official tutorials on 3D controls by Clip Studio

Regarding the use of 3D models there are a lot of other cool tutorials but the official ones are really good and thorough.

Thanks!

I hope this tutorial was helpful to you! I gave my best to outline my workflow and provide you with some unknown knowledge.

I would really appreciate if you would like this Tip and also like the tutorial video on Youtube.

Feel free to ask me anything. Thank you!

Let's draw!
