When you're drawing a manga, after working for a long time, you may notice "Oh, this top line is too thick compared to others" or "It's too thin."

Even if you draw a single illustration, after seeing the finish, you still want to fine-tune the overall line thickness while maintaining the original strength as much as possible.

If you want to use it in such a case, first come up with "Line width correction tool". However, if you increase the brush size to adjust a wide range evenly, the processing becomes heavy and takes time.

Even with a small brush size, it still takes time and changes tend to be uneven.

TIn this TIPS, we will introduce a trick that "can adjust the line width of a wide range uniformly and finely" without using the brush-type "line width correction tool" in such situations.

However, this technique can only be used when the original line art is drawn on a vector layer.

1: Separate the "line drawing of the part whose thickness you want to change" into another layer

場合 If there are “parts to adjust” and “parts not to be adjusted” in the same layer, first separate the “parts to adjust” to another layer to avoid interference.

後 After selecting the range on the target layer, cut it with Ctrl + X 、 and paste it just above that layer with Ctrl + V as it is.

The pasted layer will eventually be joined to the original layer, so there is no need to change the layer name.

2: Change the size with "Change thickness" checked

レ イ ヤ ー Select the layer you want to adjust, and perform the transformation of “enlarge / reduce / rotate”.

(Initial shortcut on PC: Ctrl + T)

At this time, check “Change vector thickness” in the tool property (deformation) panel. The thickness of the vector line will now change according to the magnification.

Enter the change in line width from the tool property panel.

Check "Fixed aspect ratio".

If you want to increase the thickness of the line by 1.2 times, enter a value of “120”.

If you want to reduce the thickness of the line to 0.8 times, enter a value of “80”.

After inputting, press the Enter key in that state to confirm the transformation.

3: Uncheck "Change thickness" and return the picture to its original size

Next, return the same picture to its original size with the “Transform” tool.

However, this time, uncheck the "Change vector thickness" option in the tool properties.

数 値 The value when returning to the original size can be calculated by dividing "100" by "the value used when deformed earlier". For example,

If it was enlarged to 120% earlier: 100 ÷ 120 = 83.33333 .....%

If it was reduced to 80% earlier: 100 ÷ 80 = 125%

is.

Note that you can only enter integers in the tool properties panel. Therefore, if you want to accurately return to the original line drawing size when the original value is fractional, you need to make fine adjustments manually.

Once you confirm the deformation, you can get a line drawing of the same size as the original, but with a scaled line width. Below is a sample of the amount of change.

Original image:

Increase to 110%:

Increase to 125%:

Reduced to 85%:

な け れ ば If you don't like the thickness after adjustment, you can fine-tune the line width by repeating steps 2-3.

場合 If you have separated the layer first, combine the adjusted layer with the original layer to complete the adjustment.

Disadvantages of other adjustment methods

Candidate 1:

な ら If the original line is drawn on the vector layer, why not adjust the “brush size” in the tool property palette? You might think that.

However, in this method, if the original picture was drawn with a pen of "different brush size", the apparent line width would change greatly as follows.

Candidate 2:

ど う What about "Bordering" in layer properties?

If the original picture is not so large, the border may be too thick even at the minimum size. Also, it cannot be thinned.

The following is an example of a 600 dpi, 8 cm vertical picture with a border of width “1”. At this size, you can see that even the border with the smallest width can be quite thick.

Candidate 3:

Ctrl You can also click on the layer palette while holding down the Ctrl key, select the area where the line is drawn, and enlarge or reduce the selection.

However, this also requires rasterization when the original picture is drawn with vector lines.

Also in the case of "Candidate 2", since the thickness is changed by adding 1 px to thick lines originally and adding 1 px to extremely thin lines, the balance of line width in the original picture is It will be spoiled.

の As mentioned above, other methods have disadvantages.

However, if these disadvantages can be tolerated, it is an advantage that it is easier to operate than the method mainly introduced in this TIPS.

If the layer is drawn with a uniform brush size pen, such as a line drawing after 3D conversion of a 3D material, there is no problem even if you use the method of changing the "brush size" of "candidate 1" all at once. You.
