Breakdown study of how I painting my OC Eyes using CSP.
🍿🍿🍿
Now to bring your character to life give them good intencity and emotional expression can go as far as tilting the heads downward with the eyes facing up or treating the head upward with the eyes facing down.
🔸🔸🔸
Has they do say the eyes tends to be the window to the mind and soul of a person or character in this instance.
In today's article, I would like us to walk down the parts of getting to know those things involved in the creation of an eye to give our character a proper mood.
• Decide on your style of art
The painting of eye often comes in different forms and can be drawn and painted in different ways,
So before anything when drawing your eyes, I do advice one start by deciding on his/her style of art, What I meant by this is before you start drawing your eyes you need to consider the kind of style you want for your eyes like
Take for example:
They too believe characters which have two different styles of eyes, One being semi realistic and the other looking more cartoonish with an exaggerated expression.
🔸🔸🔸
> A Silhouette (or semi realistic) kind of eyes style.
This kind of style often mimic a real life human eyes in a sense, but it often uses some common regular shape to structures it, (eyes like that of anime manga and high class animations such as arcane) make use of this kind of style.
🔸🔸🔸
Above Eyes drawing process:
Start by drawing a square shape, using the clip studio paint (CSP) transformation tool tilt the shape of the square toward the right side And without we now have a regular basic shape of eyes which we can now use for the eyes of our character.
Meanwhile,
>> A cartoon kind of eyes style.
This particular set of style often depicts unrealistic method of drawing which involved one making something seem larger, more important, better, or worse than it really is to evoke a stronger response from the viewer.
🔸🔸🔸
Above Eyes drawing process:
Start by drawing a spherical shape with a horizontal lines at the middle mimicking a medicinal tablet kind of looks, then using the transformation tool again cut off the bottom part and with the use of the upper part, we now have an exaggerated eye for our character.
Do you know that this about process mission cannot be used for all style of exaggerated but often work for some of our common cartoons characters.
1) Breakdown of the eyes anatomy [Fundamentals].
Before we dive into the drawing of painting of the eyes will first need to drive into the eye fundamentals or anatomy in a hole.
Hence, I break down the fundamentals into three simple parts for brief study which are as follows;
The Top Eyelid *-* Eyeball *-* Bottom Eyelids
🔸🔸🔸
🌟 The [realistic] method of drawing eyes
• Layout of the Eyeball
Looking at the anatomy of the eyeball will get to notice the key features which makes up the eyeball was such as Sciera, Iris and Pupil.
🔸🔸🔸
Studying how the eyeball is fixed and secure in the head of a person all due to the provided space in the skull called the eye socket where the eyeball can be located and secured.
🔸🔸🔸
Using shapes to determining how the iris appear can easily giving it different sets of looks making the various eyes of the character look unique.
🔸🔸🔸
Drawing the eyes I often use this simple basic [6] steps which are as follows;
Step by step process of drawing an eyeball:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
🔸🔸🔸
Drawing the set of eyeball, I start by doing the [6] following things;
Step by step process of drawing an eyeball:
1. Painting in a sphere shape.
(I don't know that most people believe that the eyeball is in a round shape but I'm here to tell you that it is not, but it's in a spherical shape)
2. Add a pale colored Iris and the dark color pupil.
3. Add a blue color at the bottom of the iris.
4. Detailed the added blue color with some dark variant color showing the effect in an iris.
5. Add more detail by adding a set of white highlights to the eyeball.
(The eyeball as we do know are sets of Aqueous humor which have a sort of glittering effect)
6. I'm with the above process all done we can then add our set of eyelid and we are done with the painting of our character's eyes.
🔸🔸🔸
• Layout of the Upper and Lower Eyelid
The sets of eyelid plays a vital role in facial expressions, helping to convey emotions like surprise, happiness, and sadness.
Also, as we didn't know the eyeball comprises of two parts which is the upper eyelid on the lower eyelid so I would like for us to start with the upper eyelid.
◾ drawing process of a [realistic] upper eyelid
This part of the eyes (upper eyelid) has [3] set of components (the brows, thick lashes and the upper lid) which is used to show the mood of the character.
🔸🔸🔸
Let's get to learn about them and how they can be drawn.
▪️ drawing process of [realistic] eyebrows
Below I have breakdown the process I use to draw the eyebrows of my character into three steps;
Step 1: paint in a stroke of a brush to lay out the shape of the brows.
Step 2: on another layer draw some tiny streams of hair above the shape of the brows.
Step 3: create a different set of layer again and draw in another sets of strains of hair.
🔸🔸🔸
▪️ drawing process of a [realistic] upper eyelid
This asset skin areas which cover the top part of the eyes hang on easily stretch downward. Differentiating the top eyelid can help add uniqueness and individuality for the characters face as well.
🔸🔸🔸
▪️ drawing process of a [realistic] thicker eyelashes
The Thicker Eyelashes are set of thick strains of hairs which grow on the eyelids and can easily beautify and protect the eyes. Most times, young artist often find it difficult during draw lashes of an eye often drawing the strings in a straight manner instead of curving the hair strains,
🔸🔸🔸
So in this aspect I would like us to look at it ways to draw the eyelashes.
Eyelashes of often comes in two types, one following eyelashes has it's strains of the hairs pointing downwards and that of the other set of eyelashes the strains of the hair points upward.
🔸🔸🔸
And when the eyelashes are drawn from the different view point, The strains of hairs of the lashes will change in direction respectively to there rotation positioning.
🔸🔸🔸
Next…
◾ drawing process of a [realistic] lower eyelid
For the lower eyelid which has [4] set of components (the thinner lashes, the eyebags and waterline) which is used to show the mood of the character.
🔸🔸🔸
🌟 The [stylistic] method of drawing eyes
• Drawing process of a [stylistic] eyelashes
This process can be done in three easy steps:
Step 1: using the G-pen soft sub tool brush, block out the structure of the Eyelashes.
Step 2: few day blocked eyelashes with a very heavy dark black color.
Step 3: using a soft air brush add some fading effect to the ends of the lashes and using the eraser Sub tool to erase the point where the lash is comes from to give it a strain like effect.
As shown below.
🔸🔸🔸
And if you feel like drawing the lashes I hustle to you,

• Layout for the various shapes of eyes
Drawing the eyes of a character I often use shapes to block out the general forms of the eyes before I draw in the rest of the eyes features for better understanding.
🔸🔸🔸
2) Super important things to know about Eyes
As far back as human when art was developed Artists have long been drawn to the eyes. And for good reason. Eyes are often associated with focus, truth, clarity, light, vision, prophecy, awareness, and observation — and so are a perfect symbol for artists striving to evoke imagery that surfaces these concepts to the conscious mind of the viewers.
• Eyes Positioning skills
Young artist how often find it hard to draw and position their Eyes accurately which of two make the eyes of their character look distorted and unbalance as you can probably see in the two image below.
🔸🔸🔸
To correct this error which we are Young artist May do sometime is using a method and learn over time.
This method easily helps artists accurately place a proper spacing between the eyes of your character is by first copying one set of the both drawn eyes and duplicating it, then Place it in-between the two eyes making sure that the two opposite eyes touches each ends of the blue eye in the middle.
🔸🔸🔸
And without done we now have a properly balanced set of eyes.
🔸🔸🔸
• Uniqueness in the drawing of Eye with different [perspective]
When exploring the uniqueness in drawing eyes from different perspectives, it's essential to consider how perspective affects the representation of the eye. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
▪️ Eye Level and Horizon:
Understanding your eye level line is crucial. It determines how the eye is perceived in relation to the viewer's perspective of the eyes starting with the eyeball.
🔸🔸🔸
The position of the horizon line can significantly alter the appearance of the eye.
🔸🔸🔸
Often times has beginners we may find this aspect of drawing eyes confusing and complicated. but to better ease us of the stress of imagining the positioning of the eyes, we can just make use of a handmade eyeball reference guide.
🔸🔸🔸
Frontal View: This is the most straightforward perspective, where the eye is symmetrical and easily recognizable.
Side View: Drawing the eye from the side introduces foreshortening, which can create a more dynamic and realistic representation.
▪️ Tilted perspective angles:
Angling the head can create unique shapes and shadows, adding depth and interest to the drawing. When viewed from above, the eyelid may obscure part of the eye, while a view from below can exaggerate the curvature of the eye and eyelids. Say for instance, a downward gaze might suggest sadness, while an upward gaze can imply hope or aspiration.
🔸🔸🔸
Note:
The image on the right having his light coming from above, the shadow will affect the top part of the eye cause the light will be blocked by the upper eyelid.
Meanwhile when the light source is below the eyes the lower eyelid will block the light Ray making shadow to be at the bottom part of the eyes.
• Use in tell characters [emotion] in depicting character moods
This aspect ice can be used to depict two emotional impact expression such as personality and dramatic action effect.
1) Evoking of character's Personality
In this aspect, just changing the shape of the eyelid all positioning them differently can easily change the personality of a character [Original structure] to different characters[A,B and C].
🔸🔸🔸
with the proper understanding and utilization of this particular aspect we as artists can easily convince our viewers of characters have their own different unique personality despite having the same body structure.
🔸🔸🔸
2) Evoking of dramatic action effects
And also changing the position in of the Iris of the eye can also influence the emotional expression conveyed by the eye.
Now for instance, the eyes are slightly widen with one of the eyebrows slightly raised at the end with the gaze suggesting the character seriousness or anger (as in image A).
whereas When a character has a sort of star like effect shining in the position of the Iris suggesting the character is excited or fired up for something (as in image B).
Or say when the eyelids closed shot with very small eyebrows in place the character is forcefully talking doing something (as in image C).
🔸🔸🔸
3) Use of Facial shape
Shape of the eyes section is a very important factor which note the character's facial language in it's complex, and interpreting emotions solely based on eye shape can be misleading. It's best to consider the context and other nonverbal cues to understand someone's true feelings.
🔸🔸🔸
With a proper understanding of the facial shapes we can easily give our character a conclusive emotional expression no matter the position or perspective of the character.
🔸🔸🔸
• Eyes use for the determining of [age and beauty]
In art, eyes play a significant role in conveying age and beauty. Here are some key points to consider:
▪️ Age is but a number.
Over the years I have learned that when trying try to show the different age group of characters, artists often use lines drawn around the upper and lower eyelids to depiction of wrinkles around the eyes can suggest age, meanwhile while smoother skin around the eyes may simply indicate youthfulness.
🔸🔸🔸
Exit
A big thanks to the readers who went through this article, I did try to break down the concepts to the best of my understanding. Also, I try to explain most of my eyes drawing process and I added a little bit of the [arcane] painting style of eyes.
