Preface

Hello everyone!

This article shares the process of impasto painting.

The editor's own impasto method means there is no real line drawing;

There is only a general structure without details.

During the drawing process, corrections may be made for various reasons.

So formal line drawing is not necessarily necessary.

But in order to make it easy for beginners to understand,

This teaching sharing content adds line drawing into the drawing process.

If your personal creative style requires it,

Line drawings can also be strengthened before finalizing.

Draw expectations and ideas

This time the thick coating method will be combined with grayscale coloring.

The finished product is expected to convey the concept of depth of field for landscape photography.

(Presentation method with clear foreground and blurred background)

The following is divided into various stages for explanation.

==CLIP STUDIO PAINT PRO Ver.3.0.2 version==

▲Thickly applied practice SOP

(1)Draft stage

The demonstration picture is 21X21CM, 150DPI.

Draw the draft at a lower resolution during the drafting stage,

In the official manuscript, the resolution is improved,

For example, the demonstration image this time has been increased from 150 to 300.

The rough sketch method is to see the overall feeling.

If it doesn’t fit, just click to correct it.

Or directly delete relevant information or content.

Arrangement and use of layers before line drawing

(2) Line draft stage

And this time when drawing line drawing (selecting vector layer),

It is also a very simple expression of pre-colored dividing lines.

So the lines are presented very randomly,

To a certain extent, it will be mixed with the color blocks.

Before the final draft,

The required line drawings will be drawn once or omitted directly.

(3)Grayscale color filling stage

First apply a layer of gray with a concentration of 10%.

After filling each layer with grayscale,

You can choose from grayscale color blocks with concentrations between 20% and 80%,

Coupled with the softness of the airbrush, other grayscale levels can be drawn.

Gradient grayscale is also possible.

Basic light and shadow effects can also be distinguished at this stage,

But just don’t go directly to black and white!

That was the polishing action before finalizing the manuscript.

Depending on whether there are printing needs,

Or the higher the precision required for drawing, the higher the level again.

(4) Color coloring stage (natural color coloring)

The soft of the airbrush used at this stage,

Brush Concentration adjustment value is above 50,

Combined with Layer Mode (Overlay),

Notice!

HSL hue circle changed to HSV hue circle,

Wider range of colors available.

Black and white cannot be used at this stage;

Use mostly the mid-tones of the hue circle.

Layer modes cause color changes and differences:

The layer mode is Overlay Mode.

Each intermediate color can be observed,

Changes and differences in different layer modes.

It will be helpful in the future drawing process or color selection!

(5)Brush demonstration sequence

The draw order is basically,

From large areas to small details.

For example: the order of drawing the background,

First use the soft spray gun to draw the clouds,

Then use the softness of the eraser to modify or erase.

Or use the Demon Impasto brush to focus on embellishments or directly draw outlines.

The order of layers and objects

Add it above the natural color layer,

Layer mode and tool usage status and process:

(1) Tools: Airbrush Softness (Layer Mode - Overlay or Color Addition)

(2) Tools: Airbrush Soft + Eraser (Layer Mode-Overlay)

The drawing tools are used to switch between these two layer modes.

Additional instructions:

Although this article is based on natural scenery,

Different from the light and translucent feel of watercolor,

Painting using the impasto method will give a certain degree of thickness,

The brushes built into the original software can be used to draw.

This time the background is drawn using a tablet,

The feeling of drawing is completely different,

Makes the drawing method also change,

For example, the use of an eraser (thick eraser),

The usage method on tablet is to use "stippling" to erase,

The brush density needs to be adjusted (the value is adjusted to 50~60).

Backlight color block performance of the theme

Tools: Lasso Smudge + Eraser (soft)

Drawing using the eyedropper tool and color selection

Line art dyeing

Tools: Airbrush Soft + Pipette Tool

Create a new layer above the line drawing layer.

Set "Clip with next layer".

Use the eyedropper tool to absorb surrounding colors to darken or lighten them.

It mainly depends on the painter's own situation.

(1) Tools: Airbrush Softness (Layer Mode - Overlay or Color Addition)

(2) Tools: Airbrush Soft + Eraser (Layer Mode-Overlay)

Drawing tools alternate between these two layer modes.

▲Color mixing + thick coating

The function of using the mixed color brush must be on the same layer!

Blur/Color Mixing/Fingertip Brushes built into the software,

The GIF file shows the use and differences of the three color mixing pens.

Finally, there is the modification of impasto brushes and the stacking of color blocks.

Line drawings can be blended into it or erased directly.

It is also a trade-off in this process.

A summary of the key points for using the above brushes:

(1)

Spray guns are used in large areas,

Use thick brushes to retouch details.

(2)

Use the Lasso Tool and the Eyedropper Tool together.

On the enhanced glossy surface of the color rose,

Use an eraser to gently erase the edges of the color block.

At this stage, you can design the dramatic effect of light illumination yourself.

It can increase the richness and lightness of the picture.

But there will be a sense of conflict or too deliberate nature,

This requires more attention.

(3)

A large area of mixed colors,

Use the built-in blur brush or color blending brush,

Small area drawing is a fingertip tool.

The final image uses two filters to process special effects.

Use of filter effects:

Divide into blur and sharpen and use them in different places.

You can refer to the content of articles previously published by the author.

Conclusion

The above introduction is the thick coating painting method.

It allows beginners to understand and record the simplified process.

Hope it helps all users,

I wish you all a happy study!
